DD leaves for uni soon, DS has reached the age where he's out with friends and suddenly I have time on my hands.

TBH I feel quite flat about my feeling redundant, so to avoid spending endless hours sitting on my arse on the laptop I really need to find something to do.

What hobbies do you have? What can you suggest?

(NB. running /high impact sport is not an option, ideally it shouldn't be too pricey)

Oh and online courses, sewing patterns and books. I have a whole shelf of these now...

GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman · 02/09/2019 08:44

Crochet: cheap, and you can make some very cool stuff. Autumn is definitely the season for making cosy winter blankets.

For low impact exercise, climbing is good, but it does ruin your nails.

You already have a sewing machine Op... you are halfway there. Scissors, pins, pattern, thread and fabric and you'll be dress making.

Go on....... you know you want to.

Other bits of equipment you pick up as you progress. You don't need anything else to get started.

Have a look at YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest.

I'd recommend starting with Tilly and the Buttons patterns and Sew over It for classes.

Sewing
Embroidery
Crochet
Aerial yoga, it has halted my crippling back pain. I can't afford it every week so I do a drop in now and again for £10 a go.
Ballet
A blog

I had a look at that other thread and the poster there sums it up perfectly .... I have completely forgotten who I am and what I like

That's so true and seems to be so common amongst women especially when children grow up and need them less or move away to uni.

Now I have time I don't know what I want to do.

I was going to suggest horse-riding, but then I noticed you said nothing pricey.

What about taking up photography instead?

SpeedyShutter · 02/09/2019 14:02

Photography. Apart from a club I go to 1x a week I'm not tied to anything. I do it indoors (still life things set up on the dining room table) or outdoors (buildings and architecture for me, mainly) and you can be as active or as lazy as you like.

There are loads of groups on fb but I'm only really active in one group now because it's specifically aimed at women and is more friendly, helpful and creative than the others.

I audio knit, crochet and do embroidery.

SpeedyShutter · 02/09/2019 14:03

Also not bloody audio Hmm

Allotment/gardening? There’s a huge amount of knowledge to gain, it gets you out in the fresh air and you definitely have something to show for your time spent.

OneKeyAtATime · 02/09/2019 14:16

I second charity work.
Otherwise: book club, poetry group
Ramblers- lovely people and you get some fresh air.

Have fun!

ellzebellze · 02/09/2019 14:40

Bonsai? Cheap as chips if you buy a few garden shrubs to do yourself and keep in pots in the garden, instead of buying ready-made ones that die in 5 minutes.

Sewing definitely, seeing as you have a machine already. All you need is some cheap fabric to play with and thread.

You don't have to just make clothing. (Though that's a great option too!). I make little things like table runners, pencil cases and other little home wares. Some people make amazing bags. also, quilting! I am really getting into quilting at the moment!

There are facebook groups that are worth joining. Sewing in the UK is the big one. Then there are offshoot local groups too. Which is handy to find out about classes or events in your area. And some have meet ups too!

There's also an Aldi craft group (lots of people buy the fat quarters from Aldi and share what they make with them. They're often very cheap, sometimes super cheap if you pick them up on sale and great for having a go with!)

I love using YouTube for tutorials for things to make too 😊

Recently I got into learning BSL. Very interesting

My hobby is to play darts. I started playing darts when I was pregnant and had to stay home due to which I got very bored so my husband bought a magnetic dartset for me. It really helped me to kill my boredom and I would suggest you to play darts. It is very easy to play and set up.
