Have Sky Plus, do I want Sky Q?

What is it and how does it differ? Is it worth changing?

TIA

We have sky q. You can record more than two programmes, but we haven't used that yet. I do find that it doesn't series link programmes, which meant that it dropped Casualty recently and didnt pick up that Doctors is back on, on Monday. I find that annoying. The other problem is sometimes you put on a recorded programme and find that it doesn't automatically start at the beginning, you have to click on a box on the right hand side to have it start at the beginning. I'm old enough to remember you got funded for videos that weren't at the start when you returned them.

I do like the search options though, so not all bad.

I love Sky Q. Far better and I wouldn’t be without it now. Storage is good and I like that you get Netflix and YouTube on it

Dogsarebetterthancatsok · 01/09/2019 16:51

It definitely series links with me

Pipandmum · 01/09/2019 16:54

That you can record a few shows at once is not a big deal as most things are available in catch up.
Just a word or warning: I recently upgraded to sky q and specifically asked the customer service guy if all my previously recorded programs would be saved and all my set shows to be recorded and he assured me they would. Of course the whole thing was wiped.

Isthebigwomanhere · 01/09/2019 16:54

I have sky Q
I'm very Northern so it actually can't understand what I am saying.
😀

DownWentTheFlag · 01/09/2019 16:54

Visually it’s quite different to Sky+. Your recordings aren’t listed in the same way - they are little photo tiles rather than a text list. I’m not explaining that very well but it does take a while to get used to!

DownWentTheFlag · 01/09/2019 16:56

I also have to adopt a comedy RP accent so that it can understand what I’m saying Grin

Smidge001 · 01/09/2019 16:57

down you are so right with your description. I don't have it but went to a friend's house who does. I suspect I could get used to it, but I massively prefer the look and feel of sky+. I was interested for my parents as sky seem obsessed with trying to get them to upgrade, but I'm certain they won't be able to get the hang of it.

kimlo · 01/09/2019 17:00

it series links anything you ever record, it's not great at picking up again after a series break.

I like having everything upstairs that I have downstairs. But do find the box needs resetting quiet often which is annoying when I get in to bed to watch something and have to come back down to unplug the main box.

MockersthefeMANist · 01/09/2019 17:10

Voice activation. Netflix onboard with the option 0f £12 a month for Netflix plus box sets. Record three things at once. Save your favourites as Numbers 1-99 inclusive, so BBC1 is 1, BBC2 is 2, etc. Series link option can be switched on or off. Bluetooth link to your devices. Twice the disk space. UHD option (pricey).

You will need a new LNB on the end of your dish which does not work with Freesat.

Plasebeafleabite · 01/09/2019 17:14

You don’t have to have the voice activation remote and it does series link

It’s good for giving you suggestions to watch on the home screen and also on catch up tv

I have technical difficulties with mine whereby occasionally it doesn’t record

GiantKitten · 01/09/2019 17:20

I love that it’s such a small slim box, so it can sit on top of our TV stand underneath the TV instead of inside the cupboard underneath, which meant having the door open all the time.

We are quite old & do find it a bit harder to navigate than sky + but can just about manage Grin

We don’t have multi room, but if we did the fact that it’s wireless now would be a massive improvement.

Kuponut · 01/09/2019 17:28

We have it - I like being able to access the same recorded stuff up and downstairs and pick up watching it on another TV or mobile device. The upstairs box depends on your wifi though so if that goes down you get a bluescreen and can't watch it until it's back online.

The other main reason we moved over was that we were regularly running into all the recording slots for series being full as DH is obsessed with every fucking American TV series with bloke cops/investigators talking in an excessively gravelly voice and walking like their arms aren't properly attached to their bodies and testicles are the size of space hoppers that is going.

The touchpad remote is crap but when we got ours installed you got a second more normal one we just use.

SandraOhshair · 01/09/2019 18:52

Multi room is excellent, you can walk out of 9ne room and pick up the programme at the same point as you left it.
Can record up to 6 things, gives great personal recommendations, links to netflix......

MonstranceClock · 01/09/2019 18:55

Mines being fitted tomorrow!

We were early adopters to sky q with mini box and managed to get it for £1 than we were paying for sky plus as an incentive (at the time it was premium extra pricing). It's great in that you can record more shows and have the mini box in another room without paying or sourcing another box. The biggest plus for us was that it marked the change between you owning the box and sky owning the box. A couple of months ago the main box was dying slowly, we got it changed out without having to pay. Previously we'd have had to pay or upgrade our plan in order the have an old box fixed. It's not without its faults but then neither were the plus boxes.

Iamblossom · 02/09/2019 09:21

Ooh thanks for this.

Sooo we have sky + in both rooms downstairs but separate boxes iykwim so can record two separate things already. Having Netflix would be great but I have that already on my iPad although rest of family don't.

DH would moan about new look and feel, but he would get used to it.

Having sky upstairs would be a bonus but not essential, we don't watch much tv in bed.

Hmm, not sure if I can be bothered to risk uprooting what we have?

I was doubtful but when one of our old Sky+ boxes died last year we went for it. Takes a lot of getting used to, the interface is totally different, but it is SO much better overall. Masses of disc space, really easy catch-up, series link (but its so easy to catch up that it isn't a problem if it misses anything, just checked mine and it hadn't picked up -Doctors today either). We don't bother recording much now, only needed if you want to start watching late during broadcast before it goes onto catch-up. Being able to watch anything in either room is great. The only thing is that it does occasionally have connection issues from the mini to the main box but we have always been able to sort them.
