Question about earnings and child benefits

So I've finally got a job at 60k,which I know means I can't claim child benefit anymore. However dh doesn't pay tax at all as he is main career for dc, what do we do so he can protect his ni contributions as he hasn't met the minimum level over the last ten years and I know this will effect his pension. One dc is disabled which is why dh can only work around school Care incase people were wondering.

You can claim in his name but then fill in a tax return to repay it, which protects his NI

He can fill in a form to claim it but tick a box on the form to say he doesn't want to receive the money. That way you protect his NI record but don't need to worry about your own tax position/having anything to repay.

He can make a claim for child benefit but opt on the form not to receive the payments. This will give him NI credits but avoid the need for him to fill in a tax return.

If your role is at exactly £60,000 and you have deductions such as a pension that bring your net rate below that, it could be with him accepting the payments and then filing out a tax return, as he would have to give back most but not all of it in that scenario. The amount repayable is tapered between £50-£60k.

As long as he claimes carers allowance he'll be getting his ni contributions.

Does he claim carers allowance?

Namechangedtoprotect · 01/09/2019 08:05

He's not claiming careers allowance yet as ds gets lower rate care allowance and highest rate mobility. He has his next assessment next year so we think that will change as unfortunately ds is slowly getting worse.

I may be wrong, but I think you can claim carers without the person getting dla or pip a friend told me this when her child's dla got stopped.

Might be worth looking into. I think middle rate or higher gives you an automatic entitlement, but you can still apply without.
