Can we have a thread about the plant based diet / China study diet

Not veganism and not a diet as such it's all about eating for maximum nutrition / disease presentation.

Been about 8 weeks since I watched "what the health", followed by China study then how not to die.

It fascinates me and completely changed my way of life. Would love to have a couple of people I could share the journey with...

I'm vegan for ethical reasons.

I read How Not to Die and tried to get my daily dozen for about six months before I stopped tracking it as I was eating too much trying to hit all the goals and put on weight. Interesting experiment though!

I've not seen or heard of those but I've done a programme where you eat 10 cups of green veggies daily. It's changed my lifestyle since.
I still eat loads of veggies now... especially greens as I feel so much better. Also don't eat much bread pasta or rice. Sometimes a wrap or sweet potatoes as everything else gives me cramps since doing the programme. I mostly eat fuel for my body now.

Yes plants, it's more than a dozen tick boxes isn't it, there's 24 to get through! I've yet to do it.

I'm totally sold on his theories though, and with cancer being so rife now, 1 in 2 😮 I had to do something to try and prevent it. Before this I was on keto for a good 8 years on and off. Now just 6 weeks later I couldn't imagine eating a piece of any animal protein ever again.

Yep, so many boxes! It was the three grains and three beans that I found meant eating soooo much food though.

I invented a recipe which we call 'special porridge' while doing it, which was:

50g oats per person (1 portion grain)
1 banana pp (1 portion fruit)
60g frozen cherries pp (1 berry)
30g peanut butter pp (1 nut)
1 tbsp linseeds pp (1 linseed/flax)

It makes an absolutely magnificently luxurious breakfast and ticks loads of the boxes but it has over 600 calories, which doesn't fit in a diet of two other big meals a day unless you do shedloads of exercise!

What the health has been quite widely discredited - I’ll try and find some articles. I think these Netflix documentaries are interesting but probably not very accurate or scientific.

I left How Not To Die in the bathroom (as the only place DH reads) in an attempt to get him on board for us all eating more healthily.

He's now been vegan 2 years and counting. Me not so much... (not at all). I'd be up for a thread. I want to go that way as well- DH looks amazing, and is in prime health.

I did try the daily dozen but simply could not manage it. Every monring I put a half teaspoon of ground turmeric in a glas of water with lemon juice and a twist of pepper though. I like it- and I am sure it has helped with my joints. I notice when I forget for a weekl or so anyway.

Can you give links OP, to the diet you mean to follow and evidence tht supports it? Is it this one?

Yes I agree re what the health, the evidence was clearly lacking and no cross argument. Whereas "How not to Die" (Michael Gregor) I found was completely overwhelming. I just couldn't carry on eating meat knowing what I now know. The desire completely disappeared.

Re links, I'm on my phone so not sure how to do it. These are the 2 book I have listened to though (audible)

Could someone please summarise Gregor's salient points - what do you mean by "knowing what I know now"?

ifeelgreat · 02/09/2019 22:26

Michael Greger argues that a plant-based, whole-food diet has been scientifically shown to reduce the most common diseases leading to death.
Citing thousands of references from scientific literature, Greger covers the top 15 causes of death (from heart disease to Parkinson’s) and describes how diet can reduce each cause of death. He then gives his recommendation for “The Daily Dozen” foods to eat to maximize health benefits.

Oatgroat · 03/09/2019 00:37

I've been whole food plant-based for about three years now. It's completely transformed my life.
You don't need to buy Dr Greger's books as there's a website www.nutritionfacts.org and a free Daily Dozen app for your phone which are the best way to start out.
It's actually quite simple to follow at home, and the daily dozen portions are small (best to use US-style baking cups as a lot of the conversions are wrong, don't know why that is). We avoid sugar oil and salt at home but it's impossible to do that when we're out so we just eat as healthily vegan as we can away from home. Indian, Chinese and Middle Eastern restaurants can be OK.
