When did your baby roll over?

Tried searching but only something about a newborn came up.
My 8 week old baby rolled over from front to back twice today, so I believe she's got it. But I also don't want to jump the gun if a lot of babies can do it at 8 weeks but then unlearn the skill until 6 months (a google tells me 6 months is the norm for when babies roll over?). So when did everyone else's baby do it?

OP, you sound like a lovely nursery worker and mum.

My baby rolled front to back at four months, but then didn't do it again for ages. She didn't roll back to front till seven months and once she'd cracked that she wouldn't stop rolling in both directions. She was sitting from four months though so I guess rolling just wasn't as interesting for her!

It's a shame your friend didn't seem happy. I love hearing about my friends' babies' milestones.

WindsweptEgret · 31/08/2019 21:59

I agree about the variation with the different milestones. DS crawled up the stairs bottom to top before he sat up on his own at a very average 6 months, then didn't walk until a day before 11 months. He had seemed like he was going to walk any day from 9 months so was very ready when he finally did.

voxnihili · 31/08/2019 22:03

My DD didn't roll from back to front until she was 6 months old - she was so late compared to everyone else. But then within 6 weeks she was zooming around the house on all 4s and pulling up to stand. She's now just turned 1 and can walk unaided, yet still can't roll from front to back!

@MustardScreams it did. i couldnt leave him for a minute.

he was properly crawling at 5 months, it was a nightmare

Sevo7 · 31/08/2019 22:20

My dd also started smiling and it was a proper smile just before 4 weeks, she could roll front to back at about 11 weeks by bending right round and pushing her legs, didn’t roll over back onto her tummy until 4 months tho. She started to sit unaided at 5 and abit months and then did nothing else until 8 and a half months when she suddenly started crawling then cruising within a 2 week period. Apart from the early smiling she doesn’t seem advanced compared to other babies her age, they all seem to be doing similar things at similar times tbh.

anothernotherone · 31/08/2019 22:29

My dc1 rolled frequently and deliberately at 12 weeks - I remember because I spent a full night sitting up by her cot trying to put her back on her back every 5 minutes, because I was convinced that she would die if she slept on her tummy, two sleep deprived to realise that it wasn't the chronological age that mattered so much as the fact she could get from tummy to back as well as back to tummy and there was no way to make her stay on her back! She was born at 42 weeks (so overdue) and was a very compact, strong baby with head control very early too, she commando crawled very fast at 5 months and walked at 9 months. I think maximum time in the womb meant she had a head start.

Dc2 and 3 were born at 37 and 38 weeks and were much longer but lighter babies and hit all self propulsion milestones later than dc1, I can't remember when either roles but past the point where I measured their ages in weeks (though you do that less with subsequent babies anyway,) - 5 months maybe.

anothernotherone · 31/08/2019 22:37

Oh yes on the variation dc3 climbed before he walked - he was spider baby, as soon as he crawled he crawled up things too. When he was 9 months old I was carrying him in a little park, not having bothered getting the buggy out if the car as we were breaking the journey somewhere, and put him down to help his 3 year old brother get down from the climbing structure, which took all of two seconds, and in that time he'd shot up (the wrong way) up a ten foot slide Shock

I also had to retrieve him from lighting rigging around a stage on holiday at about 13 months old, and from a tree at a Go ape type place s month or so later...

He walked late though...

belleandbete · 01/09/2019 04:23

DC1- about 4 months, DC2 not til 9 months, DC3, did it a few times at 4 months then never again until 9 months or so.

ReginaGeorgeous · 01/09/2019 05:15

DD had just turned five months when she learned to roll.
DS rolled from his back onto his side at 8 weeks, back to front at 15 weeks and now at 18 weeks can roll halfway across the room. It's a massive PITA, I had been enjoying being able to find him where I left him.

Footle · 01/09/2019 06:46

6 weeks, but that was in the days when we put them on their fronts and quite a lot of babies got good control of their shoulders, necks and heads very early.

ChikiTIKI · 01/09/2019 06:50

My baby did it once or twice at about 3 months and then totally forgot how to do it until nearly 12 months. She could crawl by this point and walked at 14 months but until after 12 months, if she fell on her back she was stuck. Like a ladybird! She just figured it out one day.

SnuggyBuggy · 01/09/2019 06:54

Mine didn't do it at all until after she figured out crawling at about 11 months. Maybe she didn't see the point until then.

aewwwenxt · 01/09/2019 10:36

@Footle yes I do tummy time every day multiple times because I thought it would help. She's always had a strong neck and has been able to push herself up for a week or so.
The variation between milestones is so amazing, I've seen in it a little at the nursery obviously but we don't often have under ones so I don't see the rolling over and crawling as much.

DD1 never rolled over as a baby but I'm sure she can now at 15.

mummmy2017 · 01/09/2019 12:24

I wish I had kept on I can do that diary.
The first come thick and fast.....
Don't boast in real life, it causes so much trouble, instead tell us here, well done on having such a clever little baby...xxxx

aewwwenxt · 01/09/2019 18:20

I wasn't boasting - I just went "oh my god (dd) just rolled over!" I didn't go on about it or keep mentioning it. Same as when the other mums say their baby just sat up or talked. It's a quick comment then everyone replies saying "wow" or something and we move on. But this one mum kept going on about wanting proof and was quite cold when I finally managed to get it on video. She never does it with anyone else as all of the babies are older than hers bar mine. I'll just put her coldness and bluntness down to pregnancy hormones and move on.
She only did it three times yesterday and not at all today so that may be it for a while anyway. Still so proud of her though ☺️

All mine got mobile early. No. 2 rolled over and over across the floor at 3 months and pulled herself to her feet at 6 months. No. 3 was walking steadily at 9 months.
Life is easier with a lazy baby, at least you know where they are.

DinosApple · 01/09/2019 21:32

DD2 rolled over in the cot at the hospital as a newborn. The midwife didn't bat an eyelid though and just put her on her back on her back. She was a bit like a Weeble and it was wriggling, weight distribution and physics that did it, but she cottoned on quickly.

She was really strong, properly crawling and pulling up to standing at under 6 months! But she didn't walk until 11 months, and then unsteadily.
She's still really strong and has amazing abs for cartwheels and monkey bars.

mummmy2017 · 02/09/2019 09:53

If the other mum says anything about it just say "no it's ok.!"
If she keeps on about it just smile and nod.
I hate it when people , not you by the way, need to compete over silly things.

aewwwenxt · 04/09/2019 13:58

Her baby rolls over now and has been spamming the group chat with videos. I've left because of the competitiveness and a few other things that have happened with her. I've burnt my bridges with her now and I feel more relaxed already

OP posts:
butterry · 04/09/2019 14:07

Mine did start rolling at 2 months but it was due to torticollis, where one side of her neck had tight muscles. We took her to an osteopath to sort it out.

EdnaAdaSmith · 04/09/2019 19:33

Am I the only one who found early walkers easier? You can let a 9 month and toddle about in playparks and even pedestrian areas etc but people don't half give you funny looks if you're letting a 12 month old crawl in the same areas, yet none of my children despite the variation in walking age were happy to sit in a buggy unless it was being pushed briskly and they were ready to nod off...
