Books like the Judy Bloom "Fudge" series

My 5 year old has suddenly decided that she doesn't want me to read to her, especially not the early chapter books I'm suggesting. However, we recently discovered the Judy Blume series about Fudge and she absolutely loves it - she begs me to read it to her whenever we have a few minutes on a train, etc. (Not all of it is completely suitable, but as I'm reading it aloud to her, I am editing out anything questionable as we go along.)

If your DC has loved these books, please could I ask what else they've enjoyed? I'm really keen to keep this momentum going.

Thanks very much.

The David Walliams books? Roald Dahl? Jacqueline Wilson’s early stuff (I swear she does early reader type stuff!)

When I was reading the Fudge series I loved the Jiggy McCue series too but that’s a bit too old for a 5yo!

Ah, David Walliams might be a good idea. Thank you. Could I possibly pick your brains as to which of them are suitable for younger audiences?

Pippi Longstocking series perhaps? Or Stick & Fetch series by Philip Ardagh?

I really liked the Fudge series as a child, although I was more like 8 or 9 when I read them. Another similar series I liked was about a girl called Ramona Quimby, by Beverley Cleary. Also liked the Just William stories by Richmal Crompton and was a massive Enid Blyton fan too - perhaps the Faraway Tree or Amelia Jane stories would be a good place to start? I have a 5 year old now too and he's only just starting to get into chapter books. We are currently both enjoying the second book in a series by Alex T Smith about a penguin detective. Smile

fyi second Fudge book for people who pick it up - massive reveal about Father Christmas in it! We ended up hiding that one.

My son likes humourous fic though much of his is boy-orientated (or is it?), Tom Gates, 7 Storey Treehouse, Captain Underpants - but some of them will be too old.

Ooooh, King Flashypants is good! Stinkbomb and Ketchup-Face are fun but maybe too ridiculous (kids adventures involving a lot of badgers).

No idea but awwwww Fudge.
I still adore all of Judy Blume's books.
