Hornet, large species of wasp or radioactive bee?

I thought hornets were bigger as most I've seen around the Mediterranean and in other parts of Europe are, but I don't think it's either a bee or a wasp. It has a fuzzy abdomen which I usually associate with bees, but all the other features were very wasp-like.

Ive googled obviously but none of the photos I've found look quite right. Presume I've missed the bleeding obvious - can anyone identify it positively for me?

I started a thread last week about this fella. The concensus was a hoverfly which pretends to be a hornet.

Yeah it's a bee fly of some description, the big eyes are a dead giveaway. Good disguise, little guy!

Ooh, sorry I didn’t think this thread had posted (some problem with the photo) and so started another one.

It’s definitely a hornet-mimic hoverfly. Thanks everyone Flowers
