Try looking up some sample questions online so you have a general feel of the type of questions that you'll be asked. As a rule of thumb, always look for the answer that promotes diplomacy, transparency, and teamwork. Avoid anything that makes you look "passive".

Write down the key competencies and keep them in mind whilst answering. They are what you are being tested against.

Great advice thank you. I’ve done lots of practice ones but always seem to get them wrong, I just don’t seem to think in the ‘right’ way. It’s frustrating because I want to work in a particular area and they interview based on SJT results - I know I could do the job well but can’t seem to crack these bloody tests!

Hi, I have just looked these up as didn’t know what they were. Fascinating, I took a few sample questions for a retail type setting (never having worked in retail).

I picked the answers that would be worst or most unpleasant course of action for me and they were all right!!!

I’m sure these are ways to reinforce poor working practices, I’m shocked!
Sorry not much help - apart from p I’m the answer that’s worst for you.

Are they used in many other industry interview settings?

EvenFlo2 · 01/09/2019 07:28

helloyoukant (great username!) - think they are used pretty widely, Im looking for jobs within healthcare and have just been rejected from the application process on the basis of my SJT answers Confused

Which is scary because I have been working fairly successfully in healthcare for 16 years now!

Yeah they're fucked up, you MUST NEVER CROSS THE CONSULTANT type shit.

EvenFlo2 · 01/09/2019 07:38

It was for the NHS graduate management scheme... I have no idea how I got it so wrong!

Okay since you mentioned healthcare, I just looked through the sample questions on the NHS site (sjt.foundationprogramme.nhs.uk/sample) and I think I'm starting to notice a pattern with the answers they're looking for. In order of importance/appropriateness:

  1. The patient and their choices come first
  2. Try to improve yourself or seek out learning opportunities if you're out of your depth
  3. Discuss alternatives or solutions with the people directly involved
  4. Only after that do you seek the advice of a senior member of staff
  5. Apathy or delegation of your assigned duties are a no-go

Try following that pattern and see if it works for you? Worked for me in my admittedly small n=6 sample size.

Thanks baldyfromstressy, I will give that a go.

I think the problem I have is that I can work out clinical ones based on experience but ones that are more ‘managementy’ I can’t seem to get 😕
