General anaesthetic when pregnant 1st trimester

Has anyone had a GA when pregnant?

I’ve been going through investigations for around 18 months and turns out I need an operation which will be another 2-3 mo the away.

They won’t do it

I am also awaiting an op, got pregnant and it has had to be delayed. There is no way they will give a GA in pregnancy unless it’s life or death. In fact consultant said it would have to wait until I’d finished breastfeeding, but I’ve had an operation before whilst breastfeeding..... so 🤷‍♀️

No personal experience, but from a professional PoV (am an anaesthetist)....It is unusual to do routine elective surgery during pregnancy unless it is related to a problem due to/with the pregnancy or is something very minor that can be done under local anaesthetic. If it’s something that can’t wait until you’ve delivered then generally it’s best to wait until later in the pregnancy (unless of course it’s an emergency procedure, for example an appendicectomy or something similar). If it can’t wait until post-delivery and is a procedure that can be done under spinal anaesthetic or regional nerve block then that may be better than a general anaesthetic.

Re breastfeeding as mentioned by someone above - it’s fine to do daycase type stuff when breastfeeding, but everyone needs to know about it so that some drugs can be avoided. If it’s a procedure that would mean staying in hospital/ would make feeding physically difficult then it’s probably best to wait until you’ve stopped.

I had a GA when I was pregnant but didn't know it. Luckily everything was fine but it was worrying. Hopefully you'll be able to wait until the birth.

I don't think they'll do it. My friend had a severe ankle break and had to have it done without GA

My mum had a GA when 5 months pregnant with my brother, he is fine.
