Hotel staff letting themselves in room without knocking

In currently on holiday in rhodes. About 6 this evening the guy who cleans the pool let himself into my hotel room without knocking just as my 10 year old had got out of the shower. I've complained to reception who said he has keys to rooms in case something needs fixed and it must have been a mistake either by reception or the cleaners. As u can imagine I'm going spare. A stranger let himself into the room without even a knock where my child was. All sorts are going thru my head. What do u think I should do

Lock your door.

Likethebattle · 30/08/2019 18:27

If you have a ‘do not disturb’ put that put. That’s the reason for that sign.

Sparklingbrook · 30/08/2019 18:27

What did he say when he saw you? Had he just got the wrong room maybe, hence him not knocking?

Have a glass of wine and calm yourself. Fgs

I used to work in housekeeping and on the odd occasion I was given the wrong information by reception and let myself into a room I was told was empty. It would take me by surprise as I wouldn't be expecting anyone in there so my first reaction would be to awkwardly apologise and shut the door as soon as possible.

OP I don’t go away often but the last time I did was a work thing

I was in the shower with do not disturb sign still on from the night before and housekeeping let themselves in. No one seemed to care.

It got mentioned to other guests at dinner that night and people from other companies said the same thing happened to them. I get the impression this is sadly normal and after that, carried a wedge doorstop for hotels.

RosaWaiting · 30/08/2019 18:38

*sorry, too tired

That should say the last time I did go away for a work thing

It prompted me to take a doorstop on my next two hotel visits though. Very disconcerting.

Mammyamanda · 30/08/2019 18:40

They have no dnd signs and the door was locked but he had a key
It was a mumbled apology but he tried to deny at first that he'd came in when he was confronted

No dead bolt? Chain?

Nicknacky · 30/08/2019 18:44

You have complained and that’s really the end of the matter. What else do you want the hotel to do?

Sparklingbrook · 30/08/2019 18:45

What did he say to you when he walked in?

Mammyamanda · 30/08/2019 18:49

My daughter was in hospital the last 6 weeks holiday. We nearly lost her so I am a bit over protective

None

if they don't even have DND signs, that's a bad sign

I complained sufficiently to get my work group a bottle of bubbly but I appreciate that's unlikely to make you feel better.

Presume you are with your DD at all times?

Aragog · 30/08/2019 19:23

Paper and pens? Can you make your own sign perhaps for the door?
Most hotels at least have a deadlock or chain - assume they aren't available?

HollowTalk · 30/08/2019 19:23

That's outrageous, that he could just let himself in. Does he still deny he did it?

RosaWaiting · 30/08/2019 19:32

I was under the impression that hotel override keys override the deadlock and that chains are mostly phased out now.

Also, after the incident I had, I learned that most staff seem to have override keys.

BayandBlonde · 30/08/2019 19:48

Is it the end of the world?

I've recently come back from a strictly Muslim country, where I too got out the shower and was stark bollock naked when the little Maldivian room boy let himself him.

I grabbed my towel, apologised and all was fine 🤷‍♀️

RosaWaiting · 30/08/2019 19:53

No it’s not the end of the world

But if the OP is worried, I don’t blame her.

Purpleartichoke · 30/08/2019 19:59

I have had things like this happen multiple times. Maids entering without knocking happens surprisingly often, but the one that really scares me is when the hotel gives my room to a second customer so they are able to open it with their key.

I now have a personal policy of always using the extra lock whenever we are in the room, even if some of our party is out of the room at the moment.

Mammyamanda · 31/08/2019 12:49

Hes finally admitted it but says it was just a mistake. It probably was but it's still shook me. We have a dead bolt but the key over rides it. I'm super vigilant with my dd but um now on hyper level. After the trauma of last year this year was all about making up for it and its put a dampener on things

For future travels bring a "lock any door" contraption with you. Cheap, cheerful and effective. Can't be overridden!
