Did your different babies move less/more

Currently 24 weeks with DC2. I have felt movement from about 18 weeks. But it's never been as much as it was with DD. Have others found this to be normal? I have thought it could be because I spend most of my day chasing a toddler around I just might not notice.
It's making me abit concerned though. Baby has been fairly quiet today have only felt a couple of light kicks. Think I will ring triage in a couple of hours if I don't feel much more.

Has anyone found that some of the DC where more or less active than other DC in the womb?

Hi @username67789
I am pregnant with dc2. Have found movements to be quite different this time round. However placenta was anterior last time, and posterior this time so I am not surprised.

I think it would be totally normal for movements to be different- this is a completely different pregnancy and a completely different baby. Will depend on alot-size of baby, position of baby, position of placenta. Have also found that working full time and looking after a 4 year old means I am alot less focused on movements. Not intentionally-but 1st time round you can concentrate on it alot more.

Have you tried all the normal tricks to get baby to move-having a cold drink, something sweet to eat, lying down on left side? I am sure it is completely normal for babies to behave differently. BUT I would definately ring midwife/triage to chat this through and get advice. Always better to check if you are at all worried.x

GreenishPurple · 30/08/2019 13:12

First of all definitely ring triage if your concerned, it's always best to get these things checked out.

Second my 2 DC felt completely different, DC1 was the least active, and didn't really have a pattern and slower movements and always in the same place. DC2 was more active and had a really predictable routine, really strong and quick, and got the hiccups a lot, also had the hiccups a lot when he came out too.

All pregnancies are different

Venger · 30/08/2019 13:30

I would ring triage now rather than in a few hours, it's always best to err in the side of caution and in my experience they'd rather reassure 100 women who are perfectly fine than miss one who isn't.

I had a mix of anterior and posterior placentas and babies in all different positions so movements were different each time but they each had their own pattern.

I could have written your post, OP! Except I am only 17 weeks but already feeling way less than I did with my DD (she is 21 months now and I felt her move from before 14 weeks.) I think it is probably the chasing after a toddler you don’t pay as much attention.

It’s really hard not to worry. I don’t think anyone would question you getting checked out though if it doesn’t feel right x

Witchend · 30/08/2019 13:52

DD1 hardly moved.
Dd2 didn't move that much, but when she did it was immense. One side to another, or sticking her arm so hard into me you could see the lump. I'd poke it to move it, and as soon as I moved my hand away she'd put it back again.
Ds was never still (except at the 12 week scan which gave me a bit of a worry)

That reflects their personalities even now when they're teens.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 30/08/2019 13:53

Absolutely. DS1 was a massively active baby and I could set my watch by him. While pregnant with DS2 I had a few trips to hospital for monitoring because he was just less active and I could often go 12 hours and feel nothing. Both are strong, healthy buggers now, so it's totally dependent on your pregnancy.

Flowers If you're ever in doubt, call the hospital. It's not ideal but far better to go in and be monitored and reassured than to stay home worrying.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 30/08/2019 13:54

That reflects their personalities even now when they're teens.

My goodness I'd never even given that consideration but it's entirely true now with my 13 and 8 year olds! How brilliant!

Andonandonan · 30/08/2019 13:58

Yes definitely. I was in for monitoring several times with DS (dc2) as I often didn’t feel him move for ages. Totally different from dd. Once he was born I got it - he was just a really calm, placid and still baby.

That said, if you’re at all worried, definitely definitely go & get checked.

Daisywho · 30/08/2019 14:17

Definitely get checked if you’re worried but I do think babies vary quite a lot; my DD didn’t move much at all and I was always in being monitored (previous loss and high risk pregnancy so I was a bag of nerves anyway). There was never anything wrong, other than her being a stubborn breech, but I would always rather have been checked out to be on the safe side.

She flippin’ makes up for the lack of activity now she’s a toddler though - she never sits still! Grin

Good luck hope you have a lovely rest-of-your-pregnancy, OP.

Climbingwindmill · 30/08/2019 14:18

My second moved a lot more. And still does at 7!

youngestisapsycho · 30/08/2019 14:20

My fiorst DD never move at all... i was forever up the hospital strapped to one of those machines! Second DD was a mini gymnast and never bloody stopped!

mistermagpie · 30/08/2019 14:27

DS1 hardly moved, I was in and out of the hospital over it. He was born and basically slept for about three weeks and at 4 is still the laziest child ever.

DS2 never stopped moving, until the very end when I went in and was nearly induced because he wasn't moving (I went into labour waiting to be induced). He's also never sat still since the day he was born.

I'm now 26 weeks pregnant with #3 and I'm finding this one confusing. It hardly ever moves but when it does it's a couple of quite big movements and then nothing for hours. I've nearly phoned so many times and then there will be a big kick. Anterior placenta this time as well so I think that doesn't help.

boymum9 · 30/08/2019 14:47

Ds1 was very slow and chilled out with his movements and he's like that now as a 4 year old and always has been! Ds2 moved LIKE CRAZY and now is a crazy little firecracker that does not stop moving ever. Ever

Mintypea5 · 30/08/2019 14:56

DS1 posterior placenta and moved like crazy. Was like watching an alien in there

DS2 anterior placenta hardly moved at all and when he did I couldn't feel it

Baby 3 anterior placenta again but this time high and to the right. Moves a lot more

userabcname · 30/08/2019 15:07

DC1 was a very squirmy baby - I could feel him swooshing around but not really violently kicking.
Currently pregnant with DC2 who is much more energetic and I can watch my whole belly shake as he boots me!
I would say I still was very aware of movements with DC1 so if you aren't really feeling anything I'd definitely get checked.

GrannySquares · 30/08/2019 16:08

I have only had 1, but one thing for sure is that He never ever moved in the mornings! He had a wiggle around 4am, then absolutely nothing until 12. Nothing I did would make him move! He would only start moving when he felt like it lol but honestly if you are worried, always best to get checked out for reassurance. Do you have an anterior placenta as that can also cushion movements.

username67789 · 30/08/2019 17:19

Thanks everyone reassuring to hear everyone's has been different. The placenta is Posterior same as with DD. I was just about to ring triage when baby decided to do a tap dance. So I didn't and I have felt afew movements since. Going to see how I feel once DH gets home.

OP posts:
Gamorasgran · 30/08/2019 17:48

I had twins and they had very different movement patterns. Dd2 was wedged down with her bum in my face and would wake up for a kick about at 5 every morning. Dd1 was just constant low lying wriggles all the time.

They were wedged together like yin and yang from about 20 weeks so didn't move their main positions after then which made it easy to identify which was which.

Oh and Dd2 is an early bird and dd1 is never still....

TooManyPups · 30/08/2019 17:52

I'm 32wks with dc4 and she is more active than any of the other 3 we're... In fact sometimes her kicks are so aggressive they make me feel a bit sick....
Oh and the heartburn is so ooooo sooo bad this time.. Not that that's part of the original question but god I need to moan about it lol.
X

username67789 · 31/08/2019 09:30

Thanks everyone again for your reassurance. Just an update I rang triage yesterday as I couldn't get it off my mind even though I had felt movements. They were really nice told me to come in. Checked baby heartbeat etc and everything seems fine! Feel along better now.
@TooManyPups I sympathise I had terrible heartburn with DD! Never had heartburn before I was pregnant.

*a lot not along better Hmm

EdnaAdaSmith · 31/08/2019 09:35

The amount you move (movement lulls the foetus to sleep, also if you're not moving they seek the sensory input - even in the womb - by moving themselves) plus where your placenta is, are the main factors influencing how much movement you feel, as long as all is well.

Obviously if you're worried sit down in the evening, drink something ice cold, and see if you feel kicks - if not you need to get checked out. Placentas can become less efficient and that is a serious risk to the baby and less movement is a warning sign.

EdnaAdaSmith · 31/08/2019 09:36

Sorry, cross posted, glad all is well

Venger · 31/08/2019 10:06

NHS advice is that you do NOT delay calling maternity triage and you do NOT try to induce or monitor kicks at home before calling. You could probably drink some ice water and sit or lie down while waiting for then to answer or waiting for a call back but the first item of action should be to call them.
