One day in the Dordogne: what to do??

We had seven days, but food poisoning wiped out a few. We’ve all recovered with 1 day to spare. Help save our holiday: what do we do tomorrow???
There’s me, DH and 4 dc aged 6-13.

Book a kayaking trip! It's always our favourite thing to do in the Dordogne

Howmanysleepsnow · 29/08/2019 21:55

Did that on day 1. Was good but a bit too leisurely. Which stretch did you kayak?

I second that but presumably you need a couple of canoes rather than kayaks with kids as young as 4? We went with this company which is on the vezere rather than dordogne, a much quieter river if that’s what you want

Or if you don’t fancy that, Castlenaud is worth a visit, or these gardens are nice with some climbing areas for the kids

And an afternoon in sarlet

We all (me, DH, DD1 aged 12 and DD2 aged 9) all loved Lascaux IV but you might struggle to get on an English tour as they get pretty booked up.

Otherwise wander around Sarlat.

Brenna24 · 29/08/2019 22:03

Lascaux 4 is always a good shout. Or any of the other xav s if Lascaux is booked. There are several.

Hopeful bump, for ideas in the morning!

You’re welcome Hmm

Howmanysleepsnow · 30/08/2019 02:21

Oh, @ceeveebee, no need to get offended! Thank you all for your suggestions. I was just hoping for a few more ideas to choose from. I’d looked at the gardens as an option, I just wondered what else was around and was giving it a last bump before I headed to bed.

Chateau de Bridoire. We had the best day there a couple of years ago! The lawn is set out with medieval games and there’s a labyrinth through the forest, with clues to follow. The cafe was brilliant- a set two course menu with either a glass of wine, or soft drink for about €9 each. We didn’t actually go inside the chateau, despite spending a full day there, because the games and the labyrinth were so much fun.

Shockers · 30/08/2019 02:44

You don’t have to have the set menu, btw, or you can take a picnic- I only mentioned it because it was good.

Shockers · 31/08/2019 00:31

What did you do in the end, OP?

Howmanysleepsnow · 31/08/2019 05:58

I looked at Château de Bridoire, but it was nearly 2 hours away from us so will save that for another time. In the end we got some recommendations locally and went to Forêt Des Singes ( free ranging monkeys in a gorgeous environment), then called in to Rocamadour on the way to Gouffre de Padirac where we were punted through the most amazing caverns. I’d highly recommend all three places and it was an amazing day.
