Would you open your door remotely to let a parcel be delivered?

Got this card through the door.

What on Earth could go wrong?!

Thought it poignant with all the “someone’s been in” threads around at the moment.

For those that cannot see the pictures, it is a system where you can open your door remotely when not at home, to let someone deliver a parcel or whatever.

If I had a porch with a 2nd locking door inside maybe. In current house where do is straight into hallway, no.

BrokenWing · 29/08/2019 14:30

do = door

Soola · 29/08/2019 14:33

No.

DottyScarf · 29/08/2019 14:33

Sometimes I think people invent uses for technology simply because they CAN, not because it’s needed or wanted. This is just another level of crap that could be misused or go wrong.

I saw one like this. It was paired with a CCTV camera system for both the door and the vestibule. So you could see the delivery person at the door and then the drop-off would be filmed.

Currently, I would think about it, but only really because we also have an inner door that locks. There is also a small bin store at the front of the house by the garage. It’s too small for the wheelie bins so it’s unused. So I’d maybe fit it to that instead.

All our delivery people are regulars who I chat to when they catch me in, so that’s probably a factor too.

BrokenWing · 29/08/2019 14:40

If you had a regular delivery driver, and CCTV in your house so you see them drop the box just inside the door, give the dog a pat Grin, and leave, then you lock behind them again maybe.

Baguetteaboutit · 29/08/2019 14:43

I wouldn't have that on a door but I wish they'd use that technology on a secure box so that house no.2 down the road weren't using me like a fucking holding station.

DottyScarf · 29/08/2019 14:49

It would work on an outside cupboard or something, yes. It would work if you wanted to let someone you knew into the house I suppose, relative, friend, dog walker, or you could just give them a key!

Also, it runs on batteries and I can imagine a scenario where the dog walker turns up and the battery is dead.

i live in an apartment block. If someone calls our building intercom, I can buzz them in by pressing the hash key.

Clearly, they are only in the communal area and not my actual home but i would have no issue doing this - providing i was expecting a parcel.

BarbaraofSeville · 29/08/2019 15:05

Their name is unfortunate, as many responses to the question 'would you open your door remotely to let a parcel be delivered' would be

Fuck no! Are you on glue?

BarbaraofSeville · 29/08/2019 15:06

Unless it's into a shared entrance apartment building, or self contained outbuilding, I could see it invalidating your home insurance too.

If this became a thing, you'd only need a burglar to get a job with a parcel delivery company, and they'd have a field day.

DottyScarf · 29/08/2019 15:42

If this became a thing, you'd only need a burglar to get a job with a parcel delivery company, and they'd have a field day.

I don’t think it will become a thing for that very reason. It’s basically handing strangers a key. And even if it did show you how long they were in the house, what could you do about it quick enough if you were at work miles away receiving messages about it?

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 29/08/2019 15:46

If I had a porch I'd do it but I wouldn't want someone to have access to my actual house.

HeadintheiClouds · 29/08/2019 15:46

Is this a real thing? Confused. Can’t see it taking off, somehow. It’s just the tech equivalent of leaving your key under the mat, isn’t it?
And we all know why that practice died out.

DottyScarf · 29/08/2019 15:52

HeadintheiClouds Yes real. Unless someone went to an awful lot of trouble to get the cards printed and put them through people’s doors!

They have a website and everything.

I could see this being very useful for someone who had carers coming and going a fair bit or have a problem that makes it hard to get to a door quickly, but I don't think I'd use it for deliveries myself. Suppose it's handy if you're the sort of person who regularly forgets keys.

HeadintheiClouds · 29/08/2019 15:59

Really odd. Like that app that lets you turn the lights and heating on remotely. Who wants the lights and heat on when they’re not at home? Most heating systems allow you to switch on at a time of your choosing anyway, so it’s hardly progress.

DottyScarf · 29/08/2019 20:01

Now I understand he heat and lights one, though don’t have it, because we always go away and leave the water on etc. But letting someone in your place... nope!
