Toys that you can add parts to

Hi. My son turns 2 soon. Family and friends are starting to ask what to get him as a gift. I like the idea of getting him something that can be added to - car/train track type of thing, something that is made up of multiple parts that he might like to play with over the next year or two.

Anyone have any tried and tested things that their child likes?

Thank you.

Dolls house?
Play kitchen?
Sand pit?

In my house the play kitchen, train tracks and duplo are the ones that have stood the test of time. All still played with by the eldest who is seven.

Magnetic tiles by Children’s Hub. My kids love them and we have 3 sets now.

Toot toot stuff or hotwheels meets your criteria. My ds got his first hwheel cars at 2 and has gradually built up tracks, sets etc every birthday and Christmas. He's 5 now and still plays with it all loads. Toot tootstuff is really good too and got played with a lot but has lost interest now I'd say. Also it needs lots of batteries...

The wooden train sets (Brio but comparable with IKEA and others).

My 3 got hours and hours out of these... you can add bridges, tunnels, cranes etc.

Ours is now in the loft for any future grandchildren!

Duplo Duplo Duplo.
Then wooden (brio) tracks when a bit older.

Wooden train track, definitely!

HerculesMulligan · 29/08/2019 15:34

Another vote for wooden train track. My 5yo DS has had more use of his than of any other toy, by a mile.

Brio train track
Sylvanian dolls house

My 3yo son has both and loves them

GroggyLegs · 29/08/2019 15:41

I'm just going everyone else but:

Brio trains & track
Duplo
Duplo trains & track

My boys would have played happily with these 3 toys alone for the first 5 years.

Brilliant suggestions. Thank you all so much.

Brio for sure!! All the supermarket / Ikea / eBay ones are compatiable and just slot right on. We had loads and kept it all in a big wicker basket. The good thing is it holds its value too and so resale is good. Good to about 9 years old ish i think.

Petalbird · 29/08/2019 16:09

Bigjigs wooden train stuff I find is more aimed for younger kids, lots more fantasy stuff like castles and pirates

Lostmyname · 29/08/2019 16:37

Magnatiles, magformers etc. My 8 year old still plays with them. Expensive but the more you have the better
