What sort of spider has this web?

There’s a big spider in my garden, can’t get a pic of it as it’s so fast and I’m a scaredy cat. This is its web though, is anyone able to identify it from this?
I have indoor cats who like to lean against this border to chill out but I’m scared to let them out in case the spider bites them.

What sort of spider has this web?

If you look close enough you can see Louise (the spider) peeking out!

No idea but why would a spider bite a cat?

Bloodycats · 29/08/2019 12:49

I don’t know, I am a worrier though. I thought if the cat sat on the web the spider might jump out and bite him.

Is it a funnel web spider?

MWNA · 29/08/2019 13:06

The things people have the time to worry about.

Flatwhite101 · 29/08/2019 13:14

Wow, that's horrible/impressive! A quick Google suggests UK spiders that might make something like that are Tube Web and Labyrinth spiders. Any idea how big it is?

AmyFl · 29/08/2019 13:27

Are you in the UK?

ZeroFuchsGiven · 29/08/2019 13:29

Tube Web.

ErrolTheDragon · 29/08/2019 13:31

I'm pretty sure any British spider would come off worse in an encounter with a cat.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 29/08/2019 13:32

Go outside when it is dark and shine a torch on it, You will see its huge green fangs.

SparklyMagpie · 29/08/2019 13:33

I wasn't sure if funnel web spiders were in the UK but that's what sprang to mind first, and then a couple of posters said tube web so I agree with that

They are the ones that scare me the most Sad

I don't know why I click on these threads 😂

A couple of years ago we walked along a cliff path in Wales which had a funnel spiderweb - each with a spider in its entrance - on practically every bush. I had to go first, lightly tapping with my pole which caused them to rapidly reverse back in and allow DH to run the gauntlet.

Spiders don't attack things too big for them to eat IME, they run away.

LER83 · 29/08/2019 13:47

It wont be a funnel web spider, they are highly venomous, (in the top 10 deadliest I believe) and not in the uk! Although I'm sure I read somewhere cats are immune to their venom.

SparklyMagpie · 29/08/2019 15:52

Well I had to didn't I and zoomed in on your pic and can see Louise's boots beautifully laced up and a duck pout.

I really wish I wasn't so scared. I had a massive house spider appear on my bed last week after watching it casually sashay into my room after I'd had a nightmare about one being in my bed lol

Also found a false widow that lives under my kitchen windowsill outside who seems to have made a lovely home

I would never hurt one, I think its wrong ( nothing to do with that fact an army would come after me )

But they are so fascinating and I hope one day I won't be so bloody afraid

Louise does look like a whopper though, look after her, shes doing no harm :)

Bloodycats · 29/08/2019 16:31

I did wonder if she was a funnel web as the web does look funnely, but she doesn’t look as shiny as one of them.

I think she might be a labyrinth as suggested upthread. I don’t want to hurt her but I do wish she wasn’t in my garden! I’m worried she’ll climb in to my clothes on the washing line 😬

She won't climb into your clothes on the washing line, OP. They usually dart out of their web when an unsuspecting tasty morsel saunters past!

ErrolTheDragon · 29/08/2019 16:46

I can't imagine a spider that's made a cosy lair in a corner wanting to bother climbing poles!
