Younger adults smoking - why?

I work as an advanced nurse practitioner in A&E. As part of taking a history I ask all my patients if they smoke. The majority of younger adults (under 35) tell me that they smoke, usually 5 cigarettes a day.
Now I'm sure that number isn't always accurate but I am so surprised that younger adults smoke.
I had genuinely though all the health education & pricing strategies (making cigarettes so expensive) had worked to reduce this.
So....if you fall into this category please can I ask....why do you smoke when you know how bad it is and how expensive it is.....and what do you think it would take for you to stop?
I don't mean this to sound judging or bitchy, I am really genuinely interested.

Thanks for posting this thread- I’ve often wondered the same thing re young people and came to the conclusion that young folk must do it as it maybe suppresses their appetite?
Still can’t understand why people want to as they know how damaging it is to their lungs
I’m always trying not to breathe the smoke in when I walk past someone

I was a social smoker, never smoked at home or work but would have a few if I went out for a drink or a meal ( it was still legal to smoke in pubs & restaurants then) I haven't had a cigarette for 5 years now, I do vape but started so I could vape cbd as I suffer from Fibromyalgia, ME/CFS & Osteoarthritis, when I started vaping it was easier to get cbd in vape form than any other, now there is a lot more choice in methods to take it. I'm now looking at giving up, I have started reducing the nicotine I vape towards going nicotine free & then stopping vaping.
