What's this gone off meat smell in my bedroom??

I keep noticing a horrendously disgusting smell in my bedroom. It's not there all the time. It smells like beef or chicken past the sell by date. The only other way I can describe it is like rubbish bins. Thing is....it's not there all the time.

Im single and live in a one bed flat. No kids or partner. Im fairly obsessed with cleaning and keeping a clean and tidy home. I'm very minimalist and regularly get rid of junk I don't need....I'm only saying this so you understand I don't think it's anything to do with the way I live creating the smell! I even have a top of the range carpet cleaner which I use regularly.

The weird thing about the smell is it can be overpowering for days....and then suddenly vanished again!

What is it? I do wonder if it's a dead mouse or something in the floorboards....but surely that would be a constant smell wouldn't it??

No idea what the smell is but agree it sounds like rodents.

Can I just ask - what carpet cleaner do you have? 🙂

DD has a vinyl floor in her bedroom. In hot weather her room smells awful, I think it's the high temperate affecting the adhesive or something. It has been less bad this year thank goodness. (DS1 also has a vinyl floor from same suppliers and his room is a lot hotter but this doesn't happen in his room.)

Vitamin tablets. DH was complaining that his side of the bed smelt of rotten casserole. A tub of them had fallen in between bed and bedside table! They stank! In date though, so obviously what they were supposed to smell of!

Agree it sounds like rodents somewhere in a cavity wall or floor OP, dead or alive. If it's a block of flats and someone else saw one outside or inside they probably would lay poison; landlords are quite often legally only responsible for a pest problem if it wasn't caused by tenants neglect or cleanliness.I reported rodents to a LL once and after several months of arguing the toss all they did was lay a rat trap box outside and left it in situHmm obviously it did absolutely nothing to mitigate the overall issue. We moved.

Re: the smell, it's probably worse due to the heat. If the rodents are nesting near pipes, or dead near them, the smell will be worse when those heat up, unfortunately.

I came on to say some type of adhesive like BalloonSlayer. DD’s room used to stink when it is warm and we could never work out why. Smell was particularly strong around her wooden cabin bed. I think it was the wood glue used as we never smelt it again after getting rid

mawbroon · 29/08/2019 09:22

Have you painted recently? I remember reading ages ago something about paint absolutely stinking. I can't remember what causes it though.

Apparently it gets worse if the room gets warmer.

As a kid my mum had a problem with a smell in the kitchen. It was worse every time she opened the fridge. She cleared the fridge out. Threw everything away. Washed it down. Still there was a dreadful smell when she opened the fridge.
Eventually she moved the fridge to find a dead rat. The rat had bitten through a cable in the fridge electrocuting itself in the process. The rat’s body completed the circuit so the fridge still worked. Every time mum opened the fridge it warmed the dead rat up.

🤮🤮🤮🤮

Oh dear Lord. I want to scratch out my eyes after reading that! Especially the bit about rats' body completing the circuit 😳😳😳

Pancake!!! That's the most horrible thing I ever heard 😱!!!

I think I've narrowed down the possible source of the bad smell....I believe it is extra virgin Coconut Oil!! Accidentally spilt on the carpet!! I've been using it on my skin twice a day for the last few weeks. It's had a fantastic effect on my skin, but it's quite 'blobby'. Fallen from the cotton wool pad to the carpet a few times. That's exactly where the smell is coming from.

Moral of the story....only use this stuff in the bathroom over the sink.
