Tips for injecting yourself?!

Obviously contains talk of needles Grin
I have to inject myself every week or two and I'm really struggling at the minute. I think because the side effects are so bad I've started to link it with the needle?
I'm basically holding off vomiting as I do it and retching beforehand Sad
I need to do it tonight. Help? I can't have it done at the doctors as I work FT, and I have to inject it sub cutaneous

oblomov I had to practice on an orange at the hospital in 2012 before they would discharge me after surgery Hmm

Don’t pinch too hard unless you have quite a lot of flesh. It’s more about gently raising the fat by making a wide v between your thumb and forefinger. I don’t say this to make you feel bad or demean how you feel but if I have to do something nasty, I think about my son who was injecting himself at least six times a day (plus 10 plus blood tests) at age 8. I managed to have a molar out without numbing by thinking about him.

If you want to do thighs it’s the outside bit near the top.

girlsyearapart · 28/08/2019 21:00

sheshoots I was also injecting interferon and found it so hard. Moved to tablets of Aubagio now much easier.

Anyway op as I’ve said I did inject into the thigh, managed it twice I think then dh did it after that every week.

The weeks it didn’t hurt were the ones where I really calmed down otherwise your muscles tense up and it hurts.

This isn’t very helpful of me sorry just wanted to say you’re not alone in feeling like you can’t do it.
Also the knowledge that you’re going to feel like crap. I had a pile of fleecy tops and trousers by my bed along with cold water and hot water bottles. So not fun.
Good luck

sheshootssheimplores · 28/08/2019 21:00

YesQueen my DP gets exactly the same symptoms!

sheshootssheimplores · 28/08/2019 21:02

girlsyearapart he knows there are alternatives now but (touch wood( everything is bobbling along well and has been for years. He just doesn’t want to change medication and potentially have a setback.

Hugs to everyone having to medicate in this way. Wish I could wave a magic wand ♥️

Blimey Gretchen! Still going strong then? That old technique.

YesQueen · 28/08/2019 21:04

It's a bone marrow stimulant so the bone pain makes sense, it's the other bits that are crappy. I was so so unwell without it though and it makes me more at risk of sepsis if I don't do it. Time to shift off the sofa...

I'm googling thigh but can't work out whether you do side or front or if it matters
Front outside. Basically you have a quarter of leg to go for. You could also try outside upper aem (where the soft fat is) but that might be difficult to reach. I find that the leg hurts less than the stomach (disclaimer:type 1 diabetic, I don't know how your medicin "feels" if you get my drift).

FuckFacePlatapus · 28/08/2019 21:09

District Nurses should be able to come out @YesQueen and do it, please do ring your GP and ask them
to refer you, it would make life so much easier for you. Thanks

Coldhandscoldheart · 28/08/2019 21:11

Would it help to chew gum or an extra strong mint or something before/during? Timing might be everything with that, but it might ‘distract’ your stomach temporarily.
I think if you google there are actual techniques to at least lessen if not remove that kind of conditioned response.
Sympathies though, that does sound dreadful.
Do you have a local hospital that might have something like a medical day unit? That’s somewhere that might do it for you too.

I hope you can see this picture of injection sites for subcutaneous injection

YesQueen · 28/08/2019 21:12

@FuckFacePlatapus they won't do it because I'm out the house all week and they won't come out if you're mobile - I had to go to the surgery after a spinal op for stitches out and to have dressings changed every few days. It's a case of if you can do it yourself then...
I might ask my consultant for tips. Just done it and I was retching before it but it's done now

I feel that sometimes taking a deep breath, hold, slide the needle in while slowly exhaling helps.

cranstonmanor · 28/08/2019 21:14

Good for you! Putting yourself through misery takes some courage sometimes. Well done.

YesQueen · 28/08/2019 21:15

I checked the needle size. It's 1ml I do with a 26g needle but I was feeling sick mixing it so it's def a response to the side effects

OP posts:
stillawakeat4amagain · 28/08/2019 21:28

A pharmacist should do it for you asda ones are open until 10 if you can get to one quickly. They will mix it and draw it there too

YesQueen · 29/08/2019 09:42

I didn't know pharmacists could, that's interesting!
Not too horrific today, got a headache that's making my forehead heavy and I'm sweltering but no bone pain yet
