Small van has just reversed into me...what should I do?

So small van waiting to go into a parking space reversed back to let a driver out and didnt see me behind and hit into my stationery car.

Small sound not a jerk or smash...cant see any damage at all. Got details.

Should I ring and report to my insurance and do I need to report to police?

Did the driver stop and exchabge details?

If not police and insurance.

If no damage to car then report to insurance for "information purposes only"

SleepyKat · 28/08/2019 16:17

Have they admitted it? Mpolice wont be interested if nobody hurt.

Insurance company will put your premiums up even if someone else’s fault.

There’s a risk van driver may say you ran into the back of them.

catsbeensickagain · 28/08/2019 16:20

I’d tell the insurance company just in case you find some damage later (or the van does- and claims you went into the back of them). I have done this twice and not had a premium increase so better to be on the safe side.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 28/08/2019 16:21

It is an offence to not report it if details were t exchanged

nothingsreallynewunderthesun · 28/08/2019 16:26

Get it checked out at a garage because there could be damage to suspension or something you can't see. We gave details as witnesses to a similar accident where the crasher was trying to brush it off and avoid giving details as there was no visible damage but it went to court in the end as there turned out to be damage that wasn't initially obvious.

sameshitnewday999 · 28/08/2019 16:36

If there's no damage I'd just let it go? Don't see the point in pursuing with insurance as it will only
Go up!

Overseasmom100 · 28/08/2019 16:42

Ahhhhh mixed advice here!!! Think I should advise insurance and ask them.if I should report police. Driver all fine and gave details

You don’t need to report to police.

Tonnerre · 28/08/2019 16:47

Ignore it if there's no damage. That's what bumpers are for.

Cocolapew · 28/08/2019 16:47

Just be careful as someone reversed into my aunt, she barely felt it but the damage to her car was enough for it to be written off. The bumper had a small dent, all the damage was in under the boot

Ffsnosexallowed · 28/08/2019 16:47

Why would it be a police police matter??? If your car's not damaged then I wouldn't tell your insurance either?

Dontgiveamonkeys1350 · 28/08/2019 17:07

You need to report it to the police. I had this. I didn’t report it to the police and they did. They phones and sent me letters and said I had not reported and accident. Was so worried and upset for ages. Months later they sent me a message to say they were not taking it any further. Report it

Nicknacky · 28/08/2019 17:13

She doesn’t need to report it to the police. It’s a non reportable road accident and both parties have exchanged details.

The police are not therefore involved.

EbbandTheWanderingHearts · 28/08/2019 18:50

I had a van reverse into me and the driver is now denying it. ( First saying that it didn't happen then saying that I went into him. ) Did enough damage to write off my car. No witnesses. Insurance paid out but are still trying to get the money off his insurance company. My premium will go up despite it not being my fault. Sucks really. I'm getting a dash cam now.

ShowOfHands · 28/08/2019 19:21

It's absolutely not a police matter.

adaline · 28/08/2019 19:24

You only need to report it to the police if you haven't swapped details, or if there was damage to public property/a house etc.

Overseasmom100 · 28/08/2019 22:21

Insurance said I did the right thing in reporting it to them and no police do nit have to be informed as details swapped

OP posts:
Ffsnosexallowed · 29/08/2019 07:02

Of course your insurance said it was the right thing to do - now they can increase your premiums.

EarringsandLipstick · 29/08/2019 07:09

Late to this, but if you are claiming on their insurance, you must report to police. Not necessarily if you are settling between yourselves.

RebeccaRae · 29/08/2019 07:12

If the driver gave you his details you don't need to report to the police.

catsbeensickagain · 29/08/2019 19:48

Goodness the police would get tired of these phone calls! Details exchanged, no injuries, damage to 3rd parties or road blockages, potentially not even on the highway!

If you do end up with an issue you don’t claim on “their” insurance, you claim on yours and they reclaim the money from the other party’s insurance. They communicate directly and do not need the police!

EarringsandLipstick · 29/08/2019 21:45

@catsbeensickagain are the UK & Irish insurance systems completely different?

As this is absolutely NOT what happens here (Ireland)

You are required to have reported to police before making a claim. That doesn't necessarily mean you call them to the scene. You can report directly to a Garda (police) station.

If you are making a claim it is to the other insurance company, not your own & claimed back.

If you are settling privately, you don't need to involve police.

Like I say, maybe different in respective countries.

catsbeensickagain · 29/08/2019 22:53

@EarringsandLipstick yes they are different. I presumed the OP was in UK, might not be of course but her insurance have confirmed she has done all that is needed.
The UK rules are here www.confused.com/on-the-road/driving-law/when-should-you-report-a-car-accident# which basically say if no damage to property (other than car), animals or people you do not report to the police so long as details are exchanged in 24 hours. Sadly had to go through the whole thing last year with insurers when someone drove into the side of us

EarringsandLipstick · 30/08/2019 14:25

Thanks for reply @catsbeensickagain 💐

I didn't realise that! I assume OP is in UK.
