How is suspending parliament legal?

Keeping the pros and cons of Brexit itself completely out of it -

How is it legal to just not let parliament sit for a month in order to prevent any parliamentary democratic process?

Isn't that pretty much a putch or coup?

MPs would have been asked to vote for recess for the conference season. Chances are they would have said no.

But proroguing has stopped them being asked.

Don't waste this time, we were told...since then we have had time wasted by the Conservative party election, the summer recess and now this.

Most people don't believe Johnson's reasons for this

...more an opinion poll...

really?! no-one really thinks that - if parliament thought that then we wouldn't have spent the last couple of years looking at how we exit, we wouldn't have triggered the article to leave etc. - of course it wasn't an opinion poll - and no-one voting thought it was - unless they were quite deluded Grin

if you are not on the Forces electoral register, then if you live outside the UK for 15 years, you cannot vote

Incorrect. If you live outside the UK for 15 years, you cannot vote in elections. There is no set electorate for referenda, they're decided on a case by case basis, so they could have included long-term expats if they wanted. Members of the House of Lords were allowed to vote in the referendum though they can't vote in elections, for instance.

If the supreme court rule this an illegal act it will be interesting to see what that means for the Queen signing it.

So far nobody with any serious constitutional knowledge has said it's illegal. There's been a lot of wishful thinking and huffing and puffing by some people but that's all.

If the Court did rule it illegal the Queen would be in the clear (they are her judges, after all) and the Govt. would presumably fall.

Interesting opinion article in the Guardian about how many people actually support Boris on this.

@smilethoyourheartisbreaking Boris..intelligent. I needed that laugh. Thank you. His puppet masters may be but he is just a power crazy donkey who is also a total coward

Have you ever read any of his books? He's actually quite intelligent. And no matter how many times you call him a donkey, doing Classics at Oxford is no joke.

TeamUnicorn · 02/09/2019 15:20

The bubbling buffoon is just an act. Behind that is a very intelligent man.

And as they say intelligence can be used for good or for evil.
