Pinworms! Please help!!!

Holliexcvbnm · 28/08/2019 02:59

Ok, so for a few weeks now, I’ve been feeling like something is crawling inside my bum (sorry) Not majorly itchy but tonight it was driving me mad so thinking it could be piles I reluctantly popped a finger inside only to discover a tiny pinworm!!!

So after freaking out, googling it, and then freaking out some more, I’ve made an appointment to see GP tomorrow to get us all some meds but the whole egg thing is keeping me awake!!!

Firstly, I have to hoover like a crazy woman. No problem. I can do that. BUT I have a bag less cordless hand held? (Brand new and practically re-mortgaged to get it just to add) Won’t I just be transmitting the eggs from room to room? 😫

I have to wash the sheets and hoover thoroughly in the bedrooms, yes? Do I do this before we take the stuff or afterwards? Or TWICE? Or EVERYDAY FOR 6 weeks 😱

Will it be painful, when we have taken the treatment? Will we be able to carry on as normal?

Anything else we should know / do?

Washing hands regularly, washing bottoms in the morning, is that right? What do you do, wash with a flannel and then hot wash the flannel? Or can you use toilet wipes and then dispose of them straight away?

Sorry for all the questions but I’m at my Witts end!

Chill!
Take the tablet from the chemist.
Done.

Alicewond · 28/08/2019 03:12

The best thing you can do is maintain a high level of hygiene so not to infect anyone else “Pinworm infection cannot be totally prevented under most circumstances.[22] This is due to the prevalence of the parasite and the ease of transmission through soiled night clothes, airborne eggs, contaminated furniture, toys and other objects.[18] Infection may occur in the highest strata of society, where hygiene and nutritional status are typically high”

Knitclubchatter · 28/08/2019 04:00

you go to the pharmacist and pick up medication for the whole family.
take the meds (everyone)
strip and change bed linen, bath towels and pj's.
clean the bathroom very well and change up the toothbrushes.
wash the bedding/pj's/towels with hot water.

Woah calm down! Take the tablet and wash anything used for personal hygiene / sleeping, underwear on in bed to prevent bum scratching and should all clear up fine. It's much more common than you realise. Done bother the GP with it, pop along to the chemist

Amiable · 28/08/2019 04:20

My daughter has had them twice. Wash all bedding, towels, clothes etc on as high a wash as possible. Get medication for all the family, it's two little pills each over a couple of weeks. Easy peasy.

BTW, I totally freaked too when I saw them first time - poor kid complained of an itchy bum, and when I looked there were hundreds of the buggers! Yuck!!

kittlesticks · 28/08/2019 04:40

Are you in UK? If so You don't need GP. Go to chemist. Cancel GP so someone else can have appointment. Chemist can sell you medicine.

Holliexcvbnm · 28/08/2019 07:34

Thanks everyone. Ok, feeling a bit calmer now and will go to the chemist this morning. Any suggestions regarding the hoover situation? 😬

orangeshoebox · 28/08/2019 07:40

just empty it out after you finished.

to add to amiable's list - do not shake bedding. that gets the eggs flying.

change bedding more often than usual and wash hot. do not share towels and change then every day (again wash hot). short fingernails. wear knickers to bed and change those mornings and evenings.

kittlesticks · 28/08/2019 07:54

You need to treat everyone who can take the medication. Unfortunately my son brought them home from nursery recently and I was pregnant so couldn't take the tablets. So did a deep clean, washed everything on hot, disinfected everywhere and they disappeared after a few days. We don't have carpet except our stairs which does help I guess but u hadn't heard of the carpet situation with them. I guess just hoover but I think the priority is taking the meds, checking for long finger nails and wash bedding/towels.

kittlesticks · 28/08/2019 07:56

Also just to add absolutely don't be embarrassed about it because the pharmacist said this is one of the most regular requests from people with kids!

Knitclubchatter · 28/08/2019 17:09

Historically mothers would dose out worm medication, needed or not, twice a year. Some still follow that age old practice.

Mustbetimeforachange · 28/08/2019 17:13

Take a second dose after 2 weeks or they will be back. We had them on & off for years, it's horrid but no big deal

LoveMyDaughterT · 28/08/2019 17:22

My DD got them when she started reception at school a year ago. It was a Sunday night when I noticed them so couldn’t do much other than give her cuddles, but following day I went to chemist and got a tablet for her to take and then she had to take a second one 2 weeks later. The whole house needs to take them both. I washed my DD’s bedding and mattress protector on a hot wash and hoovered her mattress. I hoovered and cleaned the places she would of touched, so door handles, tables, flooring. I was lucky I didn’t get them. Just don’t put your fingers in your mouth and clean your hands throughly with hot soapy water and use a scrubbing brush for under your nails. They were fairly easy to get rid of here although they freaked me out because my DD had a severe case. She had a mild case in May. I actually found nits worse to deal with.

Holliexcvbnm · 28/08/2019 19:36

Thanks for everyone’s advice. We’ve all had the tablets today and Ive got the second dose on standby. My house has never been so clean!!! Think I’m on the 10th load of washing and you could eat from the toilet seat!!! Anti-bac Handwash and Anti-bac Gel is in every room so fingers crossed 🤞 they’ll be gone for good. Pesky disgusting things 🤮 Good suggestion about routinely working everyone twice a year. Deffo going to do that 👍🏼

antibac doesn't work on worms - soap and water does.

ButterflyBitch · 28/08/2019 20:23

My dd had them recently. I felt quite ill when I checked her bum before I went to bed and saw them wriggling about. Dosed us all and hot washed everything, changed bedclothes/towels etc. She hasn’t complained of an itchy bum again so phew. Best thing though... it’s cured my 33 year nail biting habit when nothing else has Grin

Holliexcvbnm · 28/08/2019 21:19

We’re using soap and water too. I’ve covered all bases 😂

OP posts:
orangeshoebox · 28/08/2019 21:31

tbh I found worms much easier to deal with than headlice...

PullingMySocksUp · 28/08/2019 21:34

If you do the repeat dose then you break the life cycle and there really isn’t any need for excessive cleaning. Smile

BlueberryFool123 · 28/08/2019 21:58

@orangeshoebox agreed about nits versus worms. Much easier to deal with. Dose everyone up. Boil wash the linen. Hoover. Dose up again. Always done the job.

Nits are the bane of my life. You treat, you comb for days on end, you treat again, you tie up hair and treat with tea tree oil. A few weeks later someone brings them back again.

TaskMistress · 28/08/2019 22:42

We always have ovex in the house so we can dose at the first sign.

Don't google or you'll fall down the rabbit while with the crazy people who believe they can't be cured.

One dose, good hygiene, second dose two weeks later. It'll be fine.

BlueberryFool123 · 29/08/2019 10:10

@TaskMistress same here. Always have 2 bottles ready to go. Also nit combs and hedrin.

Motherhood is just a beautiful and wonderful experience. I had to have a bag search going to work the other day.

Security guard, “what’s this?”
Me, “that’s a nit comb”
Security guard “uhhh, go through”

@ecross I think this is smashing a walnut with a sledgehammer in this case. The ovex will most probably do the job. What I don't understand is why you didn't highlight the easy things that can be done to prevent worms?

Eating Grated carrot, pineapple, papaya, garlic, pumpkin seeds (especially in the morning) is a great way to prevent and help to cure worms (we have always taken the medicine as well).
