2-hour driving lessons?

Trying to decide on a driving instructor for DS. Have made enquiries with various local ones, and several of them only offer 2-hour slots. I had 1-hour lessons when I learnt (a long time ago!) and my feeling is that 1 hour at a time is enough -- but am I wrong? I'm guessing that it's purely for the convenience of the instructor to offer longer lessons.

I had 2 hour lessons, it basically worked out as 40 mins driving practice, 40 mins manoeuvres then 40 mins driving practice. You definitely achieve more than in an hour which would be more like 15 driving, 30 manoeuvres then 15 driving, or just manouvres or driving if you're some distance from the test centre route.

My driving instructor pushed for two hours a session but I just couldn’t afford it. I did them closer to the end as lived far away from the test centre and the routes so would take 30 minutes to get there.

A lot of instructors when I learned, 7 years ago, only offered 2 hours.

That's what happened with my two DC, DS1 passed first time and DS2's test is about to be booked.
DS2 recently spent a lot of the lesson on the motorway which was great.

I’d probably run out of concentration after an hour and do better with two one hour lessons.

GeneandFred · 27/08/2019 19:08

I regularly had 2 hours lessons.

I found 1 hour lessons were a waste of time. By the time I got into the swing of it they were over. I benefitted more from 2 hour lessons.

TotheletterofthelawTHELETTER · 27/08/2019 19:11

I learned to drive in 2012 and 2 hour lessons were the norm. Every school I contacted suggested it. I actually preferred it once I started too, I was always really nervous to start so was glad that after I’d settled into each lesson there was still 1 and a half hours to go.

I passed with BSM a few years ago and found 1.5 hrs perfect. An hour was too short if only having one a week and 2 hours was mentally tiring.

raspberryk · 27/08/2019 19:14

That was also the standard when I learned 15 years ago, you can't learn enough in 1 hour for it to be worth while imo. Also it's been proven to be cheaper in the long run to get an intensive course instead of stringing it out over months of lessons.

DH offers two hours for a discounted rate for the first lesson as a lot of time is taken up with cockpit drill, getting used to the pedals etc. After that it's up to the pupils if they want just one hour at a time.

Disfordarkchocolate · 27/08/2019 19:16

I had 1.5-hour lessons, it felt long enough. Did a few 2-hour lessons before my test. Passed first time.

RedCowboyBoots · 27/08/2019 19:16

It's a good idea. I was learning for absolutely ages. Switching to two hour lessons made a big difference and helped me pass (finally!)

DD has 2 hour driving lessons. Feels so much better and makes more sense, even more so in those first lessons when they are needing to get to suitable locations to practise, etc. DD did find some of the first lessons very tiring though - it's a long time of constant concentration.

ProfessorofPerspective · 27/08/2019 19:21

DS 19 just passed his test - he found 2hr lessons extremely productive.

PantTwizzler · 27/08/2019 19:23

Really good to hear people's recent experiences. Thank you. My worry was that DS would find it too tiring to have to concentrate for such a long lesson. I remember finding a 1 hour lesson quite long at the beginning! Think we'll go ahead and book the 2 hours. Most of the highly recommended instructors do that so there's not a huge choice anyway.

Most of my lessons were two hours long and I found this to be a good amount of time. I don't think I had many 1 hour lessons at all.
I had some three hour ones but did find them quite draining.

CherryPavlova · 27/08/2019 19:32

I had two hour lessons as did my children mainly.

Sparklingbrook · 27/08/2019 19:36

When I learned at 17 I just had an hour a week, that seemed to work ok as I passed first time.

PhantomErik · 27/08/2019 19:36

I had almost all of my driving lessons in 2 hour blocks. Passed first time so must have worked for me Smile

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/08/2019 19:42

Mine were 2hrs. That was 30mins driving on country roads into town, 1hr in town, 30mins back. Once there was an accident on the route back so that 30min drive back was over an hour magical mystery tour of the country lanes back to my village.
I'm great at country lane driving thanks to that regular practice during lessons.

My DDs had two hour lessons. We live rurally and it is a 30 minute drive to the nearest test town. They would never have learned anything in an hour.

Singleandproud · 28/08/2019 10:41

You could start off with booking him 2 x 1hr sessions a week for the first few weeks. I spent a year learning to drive (on purpose becauseI was going to be driving with DD in the car and wanted to have a lot of experience) but made much more progress when I could squeeze in more lessons a week as there’s less time in between to forget.

ceebeejeebies · 28/08/2019 10:47

I always wanted 2 hour lessons and my instructor (self employed, so you may think he'd have preferred the extra money) said that it wasn't necessary. I wanted to have a lesson every day in the week running up to my test, he also told me this was a waste of my money and not necessary. Either he hated being stuck with me for an hour or he was really honest Grin

PantTwizzler · 28/08/2019 11:43

First lesson booked for this evening 😬
