Help needed with smelly soft toy

So my son is very attached to this enormous dog. It was a bit grim so I put him in the washing machine on a 30 degree wash. He's almost dry but now smells damp and its horrific. Any way I can get rid of the smell? This is his favourite toy, and he won't sleep without it!

When I washed him the washing machine started beeping and almost broke and didnt spin him properly so i cant risk putting him in the machine again.

Can you peg him out?
Get some fresh air to him

sunshine5997 · 27/08/2019 18:05

I know this sounds so so silly but I always put soft toys after washing in a tub with a cap of washing powder and rice and leave it in the airing cupboard for a couple of hours. It might take a lot of rice though! It gets rid of 75% of the smell then I peg them out for fresh air

Hand wash him and put it out to dry?

Namechange3007 · 27/08/2019 18:19

Good idea but would take a lot of rice!
I did peg him out all day.
If i handwash I think he would be so wet again that the damp smell would come back.

But thank you.

Cover him in bicarbonate of soda, rub it in the fur, and then hoover it off. Do this after he's dry.

ElizaPancakes · 27/08/2019 18:30

Have you got a laundrette nearby you can take him to? Ours is about 50p for five minutes drying Hmm but that will be long enough to see if it’s too hot or whatever. Take a towel as well though if you do.

Namechange3007 · 27/08/2019 18:34

Not got a launderette nearby but got a tumble dryer at home. Would that work? Like the bicarbonate idea. Hes still a bit damp at the moment.

If it were me I’d stick him in the tumble dryer, maybe in a pillow case and with some tennis balls if you have them? Thats supposed to be good for pillows anyway!

I would tread cautiously though, our tumble dryer has been known to ruin some items of clothing....

Yes mine has shrunk stuff before. DS is now saying he would be ok to have a new dog. But hes years old, I've no idea if they are still available.

Yes you can still buy them IKEA

hedgehoglurker · 27/08/2019 19:49

I think he needs re-washing and drying more quickly. The damp smell will be inside, as from your description the washing machine couldn't balance to allow it to spin effectively and the dog remained very wet inside. Perhaps you can wash it with something a similar size/weight, like a pillow, so that it can balance against the dog on the spin cycle.
I personally would use a bio powder and Dettol laundry liquid/ disinfectant if the damp smell is strong.

Namechange3007 · 27/08/2019 19:53

Thank you. So I did wash him with a pillow case and also my washing machine did a similar thing when I tried to wash a pillow a few weeks ago. Not sure why my washing machine won't rinse and spin when it's got something bulky in there.

I've just realised you said wash him with a pillow. I dont think that would all fit in my washing machine.

hedgehoglurker · 27/08/2019 20:02

It needs to evenly space the load inside to balance the spinning drum. With just one heavy item (full of water) on one side, it can't spin. So, 2 pillows would work, but not one. Perhaps you could try a towel, if that would fit?

Namechange3007 · 27/08/2019 20:19

Ok I didnt know that. Thank you!

Once you get him sorted shake some talcum powder on him every so often (so long as DS isn't asthmatic!) It will keep him smelling fresh

Namechange3007 · 27/08/2019 23:10

Thank you. No not asthmatic. I've left him outside and now its pouring with rain!!

OP posts:
Namechange3007 · 28/08/2019 09:31

Update. He doesn't smell today! Levt him outside all night.

Namechange3007 · 28/08/2019 18:36

I was wrong. He still stank. So I washed him with a towel and it worked! Thank you!

I put the Ikea dog in the dryer and it was fine

Luckypoppy · 28/08/2019 18:51

And they do still have them. Smile

hedgehoglurker · 28/08/2019 20:56

Grin, so pleased!

Namechange3007 · 28/08/2019 21:12

Me too! Still too wet to take to bed though. Hopefully tomorrow!
