Does anyone know about car insurance for learners?

If my 18 year old has his own car, can we insure it so that I can drive it and he can practice sitting next to him? Or would the car have to be my name? I’m trying to find out but it’s making my head go round and round.

You can insure it for him with him as the registered keeper but its likely to be very expensive and then goes up when they pass the test.

Thank you. Yes- I am prepared for the cost after he passes his test (gulp) - but i’m trying to find a way for him to practice. My car is a big horsebox towing horror and horrible for a learner.....

You can insure it in your name irrespective of who is the registered keeper .

We bought a dirt cheap ten yr old Micra (about the lowest category) for similar purposes and I wept each year paying the premiums as they all went through the system!

Yes, insure it in your name & then use Marmalade or similar (we used Admiral) learner insurance on top. You can do that for a week, a month etc & take breaks if they are away at uni for a while. Then when he passes cancel your insurance & take out his. You can legitimately be the main driver, but I would drive it around a bit when he's not in it just yo be sure! Otherwise you could be accused of fronting.

You can actually insure it in his name from right now. Get various quotes but we ended up with Bell insurance - part of Admiral group - you get sent a black box in the car which has to be kept in there for 6 months.

The insurance is slightly cheaper while they are still learning and you need to tell them as soon as they pass and then pay the additional premium at that point.

Just to be clear - policy is for learner as the main driver and parent as the additional driver. While they are learning they obviously have to have another qualified driver in the car - then you can also drive the car as an additional driver. We put both me and DH on as additional drivers as we would take turns taking DD out. Since the learning time would sometimes be the drive to college so she would drive there - get out to go to college - then we would drive the car home without her. So we all had to be covered to drive the car.

Thank you- i’ve something for £370 which covers him, dp and me and which we can switch when he passes his test. Going to pick up the car tomorrow. He is super excited!

I highly recommend Ingenie insurance for young drivers (up to 25). When my daughter bought herself a car to learn on, so long as I was added as a named driver the premium was very reasonable. Plus she had the added benefit of already clocking up her NCD from the start. It went up a little bit once she passed her test but not a huge jump - I think it was £200 from memory.
