I am reading the updated version. Not sure what happened to my original version.

What I wanted to ask was - was it always supposed to be set in 1990?

It's just that it depicts a 1990 that seems very much like 1978 . . . Grin

The 1978 version is an abridged version of the book he wrote, his editor asked him to remove lots and then then the uncut version was released later.

(my favourite book of all time)

Mine too @OhYouBadBadKitten although I know it so well now I don’t bother reading some of it. I’m not a fan particularly of the end showdown or the Trashcan Man sections. Also some of the bits in Boulder with Harold and Nadine. It’s given me lots of fodder for my SHTF kit WinkGrin

Oh I didn't know they were doing a new miniseries. That book sparked my lifelong fascination with any and all dystopian fiction.

In the Shining Wendy feels Jack's "seed drying on her thighs" too. Oh bleurgh and cringe. And he writes a lot of misunderstood blokes whose grief/genius/artistic integrity make them act like wankers.
I do sort of love some of the books though, I found them so intense and riveting as a young person, and they triggered a lifelong love of a thick beefy novel. I remember enjoying the Reincarnation of Peter Proud around the same age. My parents deserve special mention for clearly not vetting my reading material. Smile

I skip bits too. I'm re reading at the moment and 1000 pages is feeling a little long when there's a new SK coming out in about three weeks.

ElizaP omg how funny. DH and I were discussing our social breakdown/apocalypse plan the other day in the car (specifically how to get out of London) and I was talking about the characters who leave NYC via one of the tunnels, where they have to walk over cars, tanks and rotting bodies. I last read that book maybe 35 years ago and I can still remember that bit so vividly.

I love his books too but he needs to stop with sex scenes/references 🙈

I'm really feeling the need to reread The Stand now

Fans of Tge Stand May also enjoy Swan Song by Robert McCammon- again it’s a bit dated but another great post-apocalyptic book. I just finished listening to it on Audible and it was very enjoyable.

Yes i agree. I read something by him a while ago, a collection of short stories. The weird obsession with sex and graphic sexual abuse was unpleasant and badly written.

I decided to re-read the Stand because, having not read any SK for about 25 years (TBH I thought he jumped the shark in the mid nineties), out of the blue I read and enjoyed 11-22-63 and, after that, Under the Dome. Looking on here, several people said Under the Dome reminded them of The Stand and it did me too a bit.

So, getting to the point, if you liked The Stand, you might like Under the Dome. But several people said it had a terribly disappointing ending . . . I thought it was ok but maybe because i was prepared to be disappointed.

The m Dark Tower series is brilliant if you haven't read those. First book is a bit slow but not too long, picks up pace in book 2 and gets so good. I loved his characters. Parts of the series the into The Stand and other SK novels.

HeadfirstForHalos · 28/08/2019 15:47

Sorry for the random m 😁

I enjoyed under the dome (mostly) but prefer the Stand

HeadfirstForHalos · 28/08/2019 15:49

Parts of the series link to The Stand and other SK novels that should say
