Irrational hatred of men who....

DirtyDennis · 27/08/2019 12:11

... have nicknames which are basically adding "ey" or "o" to the end of their first or surnames.

For example, Tom becomes Tommo, Dave Barnes becomes Barnesey.

Nicknames that are descriptive or bring to mind a particular incident don't bother me as much.

But the "ey" and "o" brigade just make me want to spoon out my own eyeballs.

It's just so whheeeey, lads, football, banter, lager, tits, banter, lads, wheeeey

FUCK OFF

I can't share this with anyone IRL because it makes me sound mental

YANBU

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 27/08/2019 12:12

Any nickname past the age of about 20 is pathetic and childish in my opinion!

WalkersAreNotTheOnlyCrisps · 27/08/2019 12:12

They've probably been given the nickname by others though, not actively chosen it..

Finfintytint · 27/08/2019 12:13

At work “Ey” was always added to my last name as a nickname so not sure it’s a man thing.

FlibbertyGiblets · 27/08/2019 12:14

Haha yes I get you.

Tbf it isn't the bloke who's chosen his moniker it is the mates. So hate on them too instead.

Bodicea · 27/08/2019 12:15

I don’t know anyone with a nickname like this. Is it a southern thing?

DirtyDennis · 27/08/2019 12:17

Okay, yes, I get it's probably his friends who've given him that name.

But, I still hate these men because they go along with it and because they're friends with the kinds of bantersauruses who'd give a friend a stupid twatty nickname like this which probably says a lot about the be-nicknamed men themselves.

Not keen on nicknames. I can’t stand it when people say “mate” in this country and don’t like my name shortened either. I accept I’m being a bit irrational about it though so would never say anything. A postman once handed over a parcel and said “sign ere bruv”. I wasn’t happy about that.

Orangesox · 27/08/2019 12:17

Yup! Can’t cope with it... I work in a male dominated environment and almost everyone goes by some form of nickname. I just want to speak to someone using their actual bloody name!

Belgravian · 27/08/2019 12:29

I have to counter this with girls that try to make their name sound more cute.

I’ve met an Ellie-welly. Late 20s.

Shirley-bobs. 40s and fat.

Fi-Fi - actual name Fiona and legs like a Russian shot- putter rather than the prancing filly as the name suggests.

Belgravian · 27/08/2019 12:31

Just remembered, I met a Deborah, stern looking woman in her 40s who signed her name as Debz.

stablecarols · 27/08/2019 12:36

It's not just the men – I attended an all girls' boarding school and now (almost 20 years later), we're all still known by our nicknames! Off the top of my head, there's Bunty, Sooty, Mustard, Pussy etc. Even friends of my parents have nicknames which they use on a day to day basis. Nothing childish or pathetic about familiarity IMO.

LipSyncForYourLife · 27/08/2019 12:39

One time I was walking along a street and a bloke shouted out “Oi Gripper!” to someone. 😂

Kannet · 27/08/2019 12:41

I hate when you see their social media profiles and they are something like Jon "smithy" Smith. Just seems so childish

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 27/08/2019 12:46

I hate when you see their social media profiles and they are something like Jon "smithy" Smith.

Was just coming to say exactly this!
It's so shit!

I also know someone called "James Brown" and all his social media is listed as James "JB" Brown (with the speech marks as if it's some zany unusual nickname. It is literally his initials!

Biancadelrioisback · 27/08/2019 13:16

Definitely not a southern thing.
I'm up in the tops of Northumberland and most of the men I know have these nicknames. Most play sports (have for years) so it's hung on since they were children

Malibucyprus · 27/08/2019 13:26

@Belgravian I see you've met my SIL Fi-Fi Grin

EssexGurl · 27/08/2019 13:55

I know someone who changed his name by deed poll to his school nickname.

Jjou · 27/08/2019 14:39

Meh. I can't get too worked up about it. I'm from Liverpool, everyone's names get shortened if at all possible.

DirtyDennis · 27/08/2019 14:47

@EssexGurl that's really disturbing.

Oh god some people still refer to dp as 'his surname + ey'.

We both lived here when we were younger and we actually worked together, when he was 19 and I was 16. He was a prick. Grin

We both moved back to the area around the same time. Got to know eachother and ended up together. At 40, he is so different to how he was at 19. He even cringed at how he was. In the years since, he has had counselling and its obvious alot if his behaviour was due to a shit upbringing.

So when someone calls him 'surname-ey' it reminds me of what a prick he was Grin.

Weirdly, his sister also went by the same nickname, and her husband still calls her that nickname all the time. Even though she took is last name

Amcor · 27/08/2019 14:57

Every one of my ILs has a nickname. Mally, kenno, caffy, divvy, Susso, mackers, Jadoe, Magsie, jimbo, simo, Den, robo... even inanimate objects have nicknames: bedders, rasbs, tab etc.

You are not alone in this hatred.

My name is short. They tried to LENGTHEN it to make a nickname.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 27/08/2019 14:57

I hate when you see their social media profiles and they are something like Jon "smithy" Smith
Yes to this although it’s women I see do it. I have a few on social media like Sarah diamond smith, Chloe crazy smith. They are professional women so should know better it just makes them look daft.

Also women that baby there name
Shelley-Welley
Holly-wally

Again professional women over 30 so they sound daft

Nicknames I just don’t get, man or woman they annoy me.

Ilikethisone · 27/08/2019 14:58

I do know someone who refers to me a shorten version of my married surname.

I changed my name upon marriage and a few years later changed it back.

This prick to calls me this, despite knowing I am divorced and exh attacked me. His excuse is 'but I give every one nicknames'

Last time he did it, i told him to fuck off and to not speak to me again, if he couldnt use my name'.

Ilikethisone · 27/08/2019 15:01

They tried to LENGTHEN it to make a nickname.
What is that about. My name is quite begins with an L, I got 'lolly bobs' off someone once. My name doesnt have an o or additional L. It's not louise or anything similar to lolly, and loads shorter than Lolly-bobs

A death stare then refusal to answer, usually stops them.
