I’m considering getting a short 3 month membership at David Lloyd- anyone have an idea on prices? I need a membership for myself & my 3 year old.

I don't know, I'm afraid - but I do know that they charge different rates at different clubs. That means there won't be any info on their website, but you'll have to call your nearest club to find out.

Haroted · 26/08/2019 21:40

We enquired this weekend and we’re staggered at how much it cost.

For me, DH and our 3 year old it was £170 per month (this was for gym, swim and classes), for everything including tennis etc it was £196.

For DS is was only £8, so worked out to around £81 per month each.

Needless to say we’re gonna pass!

TeenTimesTwo · 26/08/2019 21:44

Our annual is ~2k per year for 2 adults and a teen. Definitely a luxury.

I asked at our local ones, £196 a month for 2 adults, one teen. Plus an 'admin fee', we didn't bother

SleepyKat · 26/08/2019 21:57

It varies from club to club.

charlie10k · 26/08/2019 22:51

My individual membership is 83.

Elieza · 26/08/2019 22:55

And you have teeny tiny small print that ties you in to a four year contract. Read all the terms and conditions thoroughly. That mob were on bbc watchdog for not allowing people to cancel their memberships. Even when they moved house after two years. I wouldn’t go there!

Mintysmoons · 26/08/2019 23:02

Our local one is in the region of £130/month for an adult and £35/month for kids.

Super pricey and three months notice to leave.

BobTheFishermansWife · 26/08/2019 23:10

Wow!! Thanks for the heads up everyone and op for asking. Maybe dp and I won't be popping into our local to discuss membership this week... Only problem is that they're the only gym in our city with childcare...

TeethingBabyHelp · 26/08/2019 23:18

Varies club to club - my single membership is around £80 per month including racquets. Pricey but definitely worth it if you use regularly. I use club around 4 times a week for classes so cost per class definitely cheaper than if I paid individually somewhere per class and also have all the added extras like the steam room, pool, tennis etc.

SleepyKat · 26/08/2019 23:20

My single membership with rackets is £125 and that’s with corporate discount.

Cabezona · 26/08/2019 23:26

Friend pays 107. Nothing special. Absolutely not worth it.

puffyeyedsugarmonster · 27/08/2019 07:25

I pay £165 a month for mine all in with racquets and spa, all classes and gym/swim etc. It is a huge outlay but it's been so good for me I don't mind, and even if I'm not using the gym I'll often go and sit in the spa. Spent yesterday laying around the outdoor pool

kaytee87 · 27/08/2019 07:40

Between £70-£100 per month depending on membership and location I've found.

ShatnersWig · 27/08/2019 08:09

People are idiots paying that sort of money. I belong to an independent club that has loads of classes, four large studios of equipment/weights, good sized pool, sauna, steam room, outdoor tennis courts, squash courts, badminton courts, access to a large sports hall at the private school next door for evening basketball, a separate spin room, good bar and social area.

£33 per month PEAK with no contract. It's open the same hours as the David Lloyd down the road and the only thing DL has over my gym are some indoor tennis courts and a creche.

BIWI · 27/08/2019 08:54

@ShatnersWig. Then you're lucky! We have various different gyms near us, but none with the kind of facilities that our DL has.

I went to enquire about re-joining, given the facilities etc, but even for off-peak it was £88 per month. And off-peak means I can only use the gym between 11 and 5. But then they know they can charge this given the relative lack of competition!

ShatnersWig · 27/08/2019 08:56

@BIWI For years ours was the only gym here with a pool, or courts, or bar. Literally just gyms. Then Virgin opened theirs which has since been taken over by DL. It astonishes me how many people who'd never been to a gym before started going and paying stupid money that they really didn't need to. Most without kids, so the creche facility wasn't required, many not even wanting the tennis. Obviously liked to flash the cash and be seen.

TeenTimesTwo · 27/08/2019 09:00

Shatners I don't think I'm an idiot. Smile

My DLL pool is ace. It is a full 25m pool. It always has lanes available for swimming. The majority of the time my DH and I get a lane with no one else in it. There is also an outdoor 20m pool. The changing facilities are kept beautifully clean and are well laid out and practical.

Definitely a luxury. But I don't drink or smoke or spend on makeup etc. It is so relaxing to go there. Worth it for us.

Anotherusefulname · 27/08/2019 09:00

Wow, that is so expensive.
I pay 16.99 a month for "The Gym" open 24/7, plenty of cardio equipment resistance equipment , free weight area and classes.
I am registered to use 3 gyms, one is closer to home, one closer to work and one in the city.
Ok there is no swimming pool, but I don't enjoy swimming anyway so makes no difference to me.
I am staggered the amount some of you pay.

BIWI · 27/08/2019 09:04

I think @ShatnersWig there's definitely an element of that round here too - it's a bit of a 'Yummy Mummy' place! But that said, when I left DL last time, I did go round and visit all the other gyms and really, none did compare.

I joined a Virgin gym briefly, but I didn't like it and it was actually quite intimidating in there, which I'd never felt at the DL. Some less-than-pleasant people (men especially) which meant I never really felt especially relaxed there.

ShatnersWig · 27/08/2019 09:12

Teen My pool is 25m with lanes. I've never had to share it with more than 4 other people. Usually it's me on my own or one other person. Our gym has more equipment than DL.

DL is a touch smarter. The only other difference is the creche and indoor tennis courts. Not sure that's worth an extra £55 per month off peak or £80 peak.

Our gym is rated 4 stars on Google reviews. DL is 2.6 stars. So, no, I don't get it. Even though you're not an idiot!

SleepyKat · 27/08/2019 09:42

I guess it depends what else there is locally. DL is my nearest gym, by far..

I've been a member of cheap gyms and didn't go much, once a week if that as I couldn't face driving through the traffic to get to them.

I go to DL at least 6 days a week. I do between 8-12 classes a week and play tennis.

I've lost 2 stones. You can't put a price on your health and for me it's been life changing in a way other gyms haven't been.

Another big plus for me is the social side. There's a members lounge with food/drink which I've not seen to the same extent at other places. I've now got 3 amazing friends that I made in classes and now we're as close as anything. We have lunch together at least once a week and evening drinks once a week. We see each other outside of the gym and I feel we'll be friends for life.

SleepyKat · 27/08/2019 09:44

Oh and locally the other pools aren't up to anything. One is a council run gym/pool so no lane swimming 95% of the time and full of kids messing about.

Only other pool is in a gym other side of the city, 40 min drive away.

happytobemrsg · 27/08/2019 11:46

Thanks for the replies everyone. I’m considering a short term (or 12m) membership while on mat leave. My mum & sis are full members & although they can get me in for free so my toddler DS1 can enjoy the soft play with his cousins while I drink coffee, I think DS1 would love the pool (& tbh so would I). I wouldn’t use the crèche for DS2 (DH, ILs or my mum/sis will have him while we swim). I wouldn’t use the gym as we have a fully equipped home gym (DH is a PT). The gym is in walking distance to my house - 10 mins max & there are no other pools that close.

Mind n read the small print about notice to cancel periods and things so you are well informed before you sign.
I’m sure there was something about giving three months notice (or some other ridiculous length of time) to cancel membership in advance and you have to pay the full membership for the whole length of time or somesuch crap even on short term memberships. So you have to have paid 12 months worth of monthly direct debits if that’s how you pay before you can give the three months notice and notice is from the first of the month or something so you have to have a minimum 12 months plus 3 months membership.
Oh, unless you have a physical disability (don’t recall if that has to be documented). Enjoy your swims if you go Smile
