Worried about being a good houseguest....

I think I’ve been reading too many mumsnet threads but I’m having such anxiety about going to stay with a friend.

I’m moving into my own flat soon but due to various complications I’m going to have a few weeks between when I need to leave my current place and when I can move in. One friend has kindly agreed to store my things (though is not responding to logistics messages so that’s another source of anxiety!)

Another has offered me her spare room for as long as I need it, but after reading a multitude of threads on here I’m terrified of overstaying my welcome/ annoying her!

We’ve been friends for years and she’s quite easy going but does anyone have a tips on how to be a good houseguests and not piss anyone off????

I would say tidy up after yourself but don't overdo (I had a friend try and cook with me when I was cooking and it was just annoying!), offer to pay for food or buy a gift or something to show your gratitude, and take your cues from them

Remember that on extended stay you should think of yourself as more of a lodger than a visitor. So don't assume that she wants to eat all meals with you or spend every evening chatting. She might - and is probably a lot nicer than me anyway- but don't assume she will.
Treating her to a meal at least once a week is nice as is emptying dishwasher, wiping surfaces and doing your own laundry.

I’d offer an amount, maybe 30-50 per week toward bills if you are going to be there a while.
Make sure you tidy up after yourself. My lodger will leave her cereal bowl/coffee mug on the side and deal with it when she gets home and it knocks me sick.

Leaving a bathroom dirty is my pet hate. Also not rinsing your own cup/plate when the sink is empty. I don't mind doing all the dishes together but it knocks me sideways if I find one stupid cup in the sink...! 🤣
