Tell me about Chester

DH and I are going for a couple of nights away for a badly needed break soon.

If anyone lives there or has been, what would you recommend for things to do, places to go, restaurants you liked etc? There seems to be so much choice!

TIA x

Make sure you don't go when the races are on

Stravapalava · 26/08/2019 20:44

We liked walking the walls and just mooching round really. We had a lovely meal at the Olive Tree I think it was called?

Someone did a similar thread a few days back - they were travelling with kids I think but there were still some good suggestions on it. (Hope the link works!)

For restaurants, I’d definitely recommend Sticky Walnut and the Chef’s Table.
And first thing to do should be a walk around the walls as it helps you get your bearings and plan things you’d like to visit (plus it is a really nice walk).
If you’re into historical stuff, there’s loads to see - including the Roman bits and the Cathedral. The centre is not that big so is easily walkable.
The river is nice too and there are places down there to eat or drink.

I have always wanted to visit Chester Zoo, the Roman ruins, and also the Gladstone Library (which is pretty magnificent, also you can STAY OVERNIGHT there, which is not your normal rules for a massive gothic library).

Report back!

Walk the walls. Lots of individual/unique shops to look around.
Nice tea rooms and bars.
Centre isn’t too big.
We had an excellent meal at Miller and Carter.

Afternoon tea or dinner at the Chester Grosvenor (Simon Radley restaurant)
I enjoy walking the walls and by the river. Cathedral is free to enter.

cheeseislife8 · 26/08/2019 21:07

Oops, sorry I completely missed the other thread!

Fab suggestions, thank you! Definitely narrows it down

Do try the Grosvenor museum, absolutely fabulous!

Rosieposie94 · 26/08/2019 21:39

Best afternoon tea in Chester is Edgar house overlooking the river.
Best places for spa day/treatments-Grosvenor pulford, Leaf or Old port spa
Chester zoo is a must.
Chefs table is great and not far from storyhouse if you fancy a show/cinema too.

Roman ruins are a definite as is a walk down the river.

Avoid whilst the races are on.

Fave restaurant is La Fattoria, authentic italian.

If you like your booze a visit to Tanners is also recommended.

Redshoeblueshoe · 26/08/2019 21:44

I have enjoyed the open top bus trip, and the river trip. I went to a fantastic restaurant, but as it was a few years ago I don't know if it's still open. I might have a Google and get back to you, it was one of the best meals I've ever had

MsFrosty · 26/08/2019 22:11

Restaurant sergio is wonderful, doesn't look much but is amazing

justasking111 · 26/08/2019 22:15

Sergios my favourite, mad noisy place full of atmosphere, right next to the cathedral too.

Chester shopping is not as good as it was, we tend to go to Cheshire Oaks these days.

Ownerofmultiplechimps · 26/08/2019 22:34

La Fattoria is mine & oh favourite restaurant, it's so good. Lots of nice places along the river for drinks & in town too

cheeseislife8 · 26/08/2019 23:16

This is great, thank you guys! I'm making lists Grin can't wait!

Cheshire sandwich company for a lovely bite to eat during a day of walking through town. Jaunty goat does great coffee. Hickory’s for food in the evening and a stroll next to the river.
