Ebay help please, something is making me uncomfortable but I don't know why

I can't prove anything's wrong but my gut instinct is so strongly telling me that something doesn't feel right.

I've been on Ebay for years and usually sell average clothes. It's unusual for anyone to send me questions as my wording is very clear. I have minimal communication with my buyers, if at all.

Last week I sold an original t-shirt of a 90s band for what I thought was quite a high price, as I know from searches that these things sell.

Within only a few minutes of putting the listing up, I received a message asking me if I had any more t-shirts to sell. I replied to say no. I then looked at the guy's profile and he was actually a reseller of band t-shirts, so I'm glad he didn't buy it as I hate the thought of people buying my stuff just to sell on. I know a lot of people don't mind, but personally it makes me feel very uncomfortable when people are so blatant about it. I know there aren't any rules against it but I hate the thought of people doing this with my stuff, especially when they're buying and selling on the same account so not even trying to hide it. I've done it myself a couple of times with a very occasional charity shop item, but I would never be so blatant about it or shove it in the seller's face.

A few minutes later, only ten minutes after the listing going live, someone else buys the item but it says awaiting payment. I didn't even realise this was possible as I was sure I'd set up my account to require immediate payment, but I was wrong about that.

The buyer then sends me a message asking if I have any more t-shirts for sale! I reply to say no. Buyer then pays. I look at their profile and it's only a few months old and has only been used to buy band t-shirts.

I mean there's nothing technically wrong here, but my instinct is pulling so strongly on this one. I can't even explain why.

I sometimes sell an item I no longer need/use on eBay.

It's not my business what they do with it. It's either auction (when you got the best price that anyone was prepared to pay, at that time) or a buy it now (when YOU set the price).

RushianDisney · 26/08/2019 11:09

I think @NotTonightJosepheen has the right idea, you've priced it for much less than its 'worth' hence people asking if you have any more, as clearly there are bargains to be had from you. Have you looked at what other people are selling the tshirt for? I've seen original Rolling Stone Tshirts sell for hundreds of pounds.

@RushianDisney yes I have looked it up. I originally tried selling it a couple of years ago for £10 less but nobody was interested so I took the listing down.

I don't have any other t-shirts as I got rid of all my other ones years ago. I just kept this one for some reason.

I think you are reading far too much into “listen to your gut comments”. That’s usually in relation to cheating husbands, not eBay sales.

GrinGrin

There literally isn't a problem here you sold the t shirt you will send it and it may be fine. Or he may open a case and try something dodgy. You have no way of knowing this about anything you sell regardless if they send messages or not.

ChildminderMum · 26/08/2019 11:14

You're selling things for money and you are uncomfortable about other people selling things for money?

Lots of people run businesses buying and selling stuff!

Numbersround · 26/08/2019 11:14

£10 more, I mean.

I think if you can't even imagine what the danger your gut is warning you of might be, it's likely a sign that your instincts are wrong on this one.

Princessfaffalot · 26/08/2019 11:18

You must have an awful lot of time on your hands op...this thread is frankly batshit.

actuallyquitesmall · 26/08/2019 11:20

The re-seller was contacting you for two reasons:
One - in case you were a private seller and had some more so he could negotiate a cheap deal for the lot before you realised their true worth,
and Two - to make sure you weren't another re-seller treading on his patch.

Ravenblack · 26/08/2019 11:24

@Numbersround

FGS, if such trivial stuff on ebay is upsetting you and 'making you feel uncomfortable' then delete your account and come off it!

iklboo · 26/08/2019 11:24

I don't get it. You're unhappy that an item you sold might be sold on? There's nothing wrong with that.

Wholesalers sell goods to supermarkets cheaper, the supermarkets mark up the stuff and sell it to us for a profit. That's all these guys are doing.

Luckingfovely · 26/08/2019 11:25

I think you have too much time on your hands Grin this makes zero sense.

Go and have a cup of tea and think about something else Brew

Ravenblack · 26/08/2019 11:30

About 7-8 years ago, I got a shit load of stuff from The Works and Poundland and B & M and started selling it on ebay to buyers in Europe, The USA, and Australia. I was selling items for £10 that I got for a pound! And items for £20 that I got for a fiver.

I got some arsehole messaging me saying 'what a cunt you are, getting stuff for a quid from poundland - and selling it for for a tenner to unsuspecting foreigners.' (This was before the buyers and bidders were hidden.)

I reported him to ebay, and he got his account deleted.

Buy low, sell high. That's a well-documented fact that ANY seller should know.

Sounds like you are sore and angry that someone is making more money than you @Numbersround Wink

Numbersround · 26/08/2019 11:32

@Ravenblack I'm just a private seller selling a few items of clothing that I no longer wear. I don't buy stuff just to sell it. I buy stuff that I use myself.

The intuition comments you talk about are where something can go wrong. Not about resellers on eBay

Sell at a price you're happy with, take lots of pictures, send off and forget.

Oh, and enjoy your cash!

NoSquirrels · 26/08/2019 11:41

Can’t say I can see what there could possibly be to be worried about on this one. I’d just be grateful for a quick sale.

Jux · 26/08/2019 11:42

We do tell people to listen to their gut but really context is everything! If the payment's gone through and is in your account then you don't beed to listen to your gut as you're not being cheated.

There is nothing odd about two buyers seeing the same item within minutes of each other or of it going up. There is no scam here.

If you don't like the idea of your stuff being used as merchandise then don't treat it so yourself.

Oldraver · 26/08/2019 11:45

You're worrying way too much over something trivial. The buyer who specialises in this probably thinks they could sell it for more or is checking your not a competitor

You think it's ok for you to resell so should be ok for others

Qcng · 26/08/2019 11:47

You probably feel "off" because you realise that the T-shirt you have sold yourself could be sold for more by somebody else, so you're worried you're being "cheated" out of the highest market value of the product.

So your "intuition" is basically, could I have made more?

Maybe yes, but maybe no. That's eBay for you.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 26/08/2019 11:47

So you're reselling a shirt that you bought to someone that may resell a shirt they bought to someone that may resell that shirt...

I have a funny feeling about people on eBay, but not ones that resell or t-shirts..

CloudRusting · 26/08/2019 11:50

I suspect that your “gut feeling” here is largely pissed-offness that someone is going to make money off your stuff. Which I can understand but also is a basic of capitalism.

Numbersround · 26/08/2019 11:51

No. I'm selling a shirt I bought for myself years ago and have worn countless times. Reselling is where you buy something you have no intention of using, with the aim of selling it on asap.
