DC morning drink

What do your young DC have as a drink first thing? DD (3.5) still has some warm milk (same at bedtime) but thinking it's time to move on to something less... milky?! Not massively keen on the idea of juice as v sugary (she gets plenty of biscuits etc during the average day/week/month anyway!!). She does drink weak tea once or twice a week with a 'proper' breakfast but I don't think it's an appropriate everyday drink for a child so young.

Gin? Grin

What do your preschoolers / early primary aged DC drink in the morning?

Milk / squash / fresh juice usually

IamChipmunk · 26/08/2019 08:30

Water or milk here, dcs 3&5. But just cold milk straight from the fridge.

PaddyF0dder · 26/08/2019 08:32

Fresh fruit juice.

Water

nothanksbyenow · 26/08/2019 08:34

Milk, squash or juice.
I have been cracking down a bit on just having water in between meals as that’s when sugary drinks have the worst effect on teeth.

PullingMySocksUp · 26/08/2019 08:35

My nine yr old still has milk. I think that’s fine.

Kinsters · 26/08/2019 08:37

Could do decaf tea if it's the caffeine that you think isn't appropriate?

BikeRunSki · 26/08/2019 08:38

Milk, water, fresh juice diluted a bit.

WineIsMyCarb · 26/08/2019 08:39

Thanks everyone good to know. Will stick with milk for a bit then. 🥛

My DS has a bit of smoothie watered down a touch

beetleaugust · 26/08/2019 08:39

Water usually, sometimes she will ask for hot ribena. She has a dairy intolerance so can't have milk.

BillywilliamV · 26/08/2019 08:40

My 16yo did still has milk, it’s the only breakfast she has. Thank God for the stuff!
Why would you stop a young child from having it?

kaytee87 · 26/08/2019 08:43

Ds is 3. He has cold milk usually. He's not that thirsty in the morning though so it's usually only half a cup.

euro23451277 · 26/08/2019 08:43

I’d keep up with the milk! Why introduce anything else when milk in the healthiest and good for bones and teeth?
DC 4 still has a cup before bed, and would drink it all day if he could, he loves dairy.

Camomila · 26/08/2019 09:05

water, diluted OJ, or warm milk 'coffee' sometimes (horlicks!)

ExpletiveDelighted · 26/08/2019 09:08

Mine went from milk to water. Juice occasionally (we buy a carton maybe once a month).

SandraOhshair · 26/08/2019 09:41

Still on with milk with my 9 year old.

raspberryk · 26/08/2019 10:16

Fresh apple juice mostly , smoothie, milk, water, sometimes cordial.

Silversun83 · 26/08/2019 10:43

Just water. DC1 (3) has quite a lot of milk at bedtime so find having it in the morning as well fills her up too much so she then doesn't want breakfast.

DC2 (17 months) has water too. Will give him milk but only after breakfast so that's usually mid-morning though.

HysteryMystery · 26/08/2019 11:16

My nearly 10 year old and 7 year old still drink a mug of milk every morning. Hot or hot choc in winter. If it's really hot in summer I give them water instead but that's not their choice!

Firecarrier · 26/08/2019 11:24

Milk for youngest (8 and 6) unless having cereal then they don't generally want a separate drink first thing. I think milky weakish tea is fine in moderation, everyone I know was brought up on it. It makes me laugh when people recoil in horror at children having a cup of tea but think it fine to give them artificial sweeteners, sugary drinks, artificial colours etc. Even pure juices are not good for the teeth and pure Apple juice tastes like pure sugar to me.

Our general rule has always been milk or water only with the occasional pop/juice for treats.

Also find it odd when people say their children won't drink water. They would if they were thirsty! How do they think half the population of the world go on with 'just' water to drink.

Not really surprising though when manufacturers make special 'baby juice'.

thebakerwithboobs · 26/08/2019 13:29

All of our children had milk for breakfast well into their teens (and beyond for the two adults!) We have never been massive morning eaters but they'll always drink milk. You wouldn't think twice about putting milk on cereal?
