3 year old burn hand, big blister on pads below fingers

Dd burnt her hand last night. We ran under cold water, and dressed lightly overnight in a bandage.

This morning it's a big blister below the fingers covering about half the width of the hand span Sad

I have just put some savlon on and a plaster. Do you think she needs to go to hospital?

The actual burn and blister is on the hand not fingeres

Yes! If it's bigger than a 50p, seek medical attention.

I think she does. When DS burnt his hand, we phoned for advise and were told to take him in. He was seen, then had to attend the burn clinic. They said burns on the hand needed to be checked.

NannyR · 26/08/2019 07:25

That sounds like it should be seen by someone. Burns on hands and fingers are supposed to be checked out by a doctor as, if they heal badly they can cause long-term problems with how the fingers move.

Rinse the Savlon off and take the plaster off asap. Yes, I'd seek advice.

NHS advice is for get burns checked on under 5yos, I’d go to your local Minor Injuries unit (or perhaps Urgent Care).

Really it’s just a case of keep it clean & protected though until it heals.

browneyesblue · 26/08/2019 07:30

It was in a similar place. They needed to make sure his skin didn’t contract as it healed (or if scar tissue formed), so that the had would still have its full range of motion.

MrsAmaretto · 26/08/2019 07:33

Yes, NHS advice is very clear.

I managed to get a hot oil burn on my finger a few weeks ago; awful blister so feel well placed to advise Confused
Medical advice should be sought apparently if the burn is on a hand and especially for a child but I found the pharmacy was great for this and went a few times to get it checked. You can also pick up special healing gel blister plasters to protect it or they do a gauze patch with a blister protection coating on the back you can fix on with micropore tape.

The advice I received was DO NOT burst it. You can't get any infections whilst the blister is intact.

Mine popped in a dog lead situation 9 days later, skin was good underneath and I then used Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream. Three weeks later the area is only slightly pink and won't scar I don't think.

Even though it looked hideous it didn't hurt at all and was more an inconvenience than anything.

Actually took a photo as found so little helpful information online.

It’s really important to get burns on the hands checked- they quite often need skin grafts to maintain flexibility.

daisypond · 26/08/2019 07:48

Take the Savlon off. I’d get it looked at.

beccarocksbaby · 26/08/2019 07:53

Nurse here - get her checked over at urgent care, she shouldn't have dry bandages on unless it's been looked at as they could stick and break the blister, it's also a painful spot to have them and as PP said sometimes they need grafts to stop the healing process stiffening the hand.

Sometimes it's just ok but don't risk it.

WillaDaPeephole · 26/08/2019 08:08

Doctor here- yes it needs to be seen, sooner rather than later, even small burns on hands can cause big problems with movement and function.
