Orthodox Jewish hats

This is a random one but I can't find anything on the internet:
We've just been in Saas-Fee for a week. A large group of Orthodox Jewish people were staying there.
Some of the men wore large brimmed black hats. Can anyone tell me why?
It didn't seem to be an age thing.

Half guessing here so happy to be corrected but I think those hats are worn by Hasidic Jewish people which is a religious group within Judaism.

Thank you.
But not compulsory within their community? I'm wondering if it's a fashion or denotes something. Not all the men were wearing them.

I think they’re usually worn after marriage?

Haredi. It's traditional.

If you can’t find anything on the internet about all the different hats Orthodox Jews wear then you are doing something wrong. Google the words Orthodox Jewish Hats and hey presto a multitude of information.

I think it depicts where in the world they originate. I remember having a conversation about it with a Jewish colleague, apologies if I get any of it wrong.

He said it's nothing to do with how religious they are etc.

I’m not sure but they’re expensive. I used to work in a leisure centre in a Jewish area of the north east, and the centre would often be used by the community for private hire events. People would come up to London for some events that were held there, and would leave their hats behind accidentally. One gentleman said it cost him £300 🙈 but then for something worn so frequently I suppose you splurge a bit

religionnews.com/2019/04/09/for-orthodox-jewish-men-the-hat-known-as-a-borsalino-is-tops/

but the hat that comes to my mind is different - higher crown

They don't have to wear fedoras, but many do. Not after marriage, but after their bar mitzvah at age 13. They must wear a kippah (yalmulke in Yiddish, skullcap in English). If they're haradi, the kippah and their suit will be black (white shirt underneath, tallit (prayer shawl) under the shirt, with tassels hanging out from under the shirt.
