Anyone save there change/£2 coins/£5 notes

I'm looking at new ways to generate little amounts of savings - when I was at Uni I use to save all £2 coins in a jar - then cash them at the bank when it was full.

Does anyone do this or other ways now and how much do you usually make of it a year?

Thanks!

I have a money box in which I save all my £2 coins. I've had it for years and it's not full yet, but holds £1000 when I eventually fill it up. I use my card more than cash so that might be my problem!

I save the £2 coins. I put them in the bank plastic bags with £20 in each bag. I soon get up to £100. I buy any my husband has and always ask for them in change. I also save in notes but they are too easy to spend.

I use Plum. It links to your bank account (perfectly safe, it's all approved) and gently skims money out of your account in small amounts that aren't noticeable based on your average outgoings.

In just over a year I have financed myself a new Apple laptop, half a new boiler and half a lab puppy.

@Buddywoo

You BUY £2 coins from your own husband Confused

I rarely touch cash for personal spending OP, so never have change.

See if your bank offers a save the change option. My Lloyd’s account rounds up to the next £ on every purchase and puts it in my savings. It can be annoying when I actually need it, but it’s otherwise really helpful for saving.

I do save my £2 coins for the tooth fairy though...

I save £2 coins in a jar and have done for a while. Every so often I count them up and take them to bank them, then treat myself. Just bought some new glasses with the last lot - something I needed anyway I suppose, but a lot less painful with money from my £2 hoard. I also know someone who saves every £5 she comes across in a tin. I tried that for a while but found I noticed it too much. £2 coins are easy to put aside.

@pommingtonbear I have a Monzo card for this - but because I can 'see the saving' (i.e in one of those pots) it makes me dip in and dip out of it.

Anyone pay themselves for things? My sister does this - like she will eat a chocolate bar out of a cupboard and then put 50p in the snack tin. (Although I'm not sure if this is a money thing or a calorie thing.)

I use save the change on my bank account.
And I draw out my housekeeping money so I pay for most things with cash, it makes it more real than just tapping my card. Once it’s gone it’s gone with cash.

My late MIL used to save £2 coins, she payed for while holidays doing it. We now do the same, but haven't got that much saved yet as we rarely use cash. I also put any unusual 50p I come across in a jar for DD, after looking on eBay some of them are worth 10 times the amount!

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 24/08/2019 14:20

I’ve done this for the last 4 years Using the pots you have to break (get mine from B&M), I save all £2 & £1 coins and bung notes in as often as I can, it takes about a year to fill and I’ve had between £500-£850 pound in them!

twoheaped · 24/08/2019 14:24

My dh puts £1 coins away, not all, just some, saves £700-£800 a year.
Myself and the kids divvy it up for school holiday spends Grin

RavenLG · 24/08/2019 14:33

My mum and dad save £2 and have a jar full, works well for them as they take the money on holiday (camping) so they never 'save' for spending.

I never use cash so this would be fruitless for me. I should look into something like plum.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 24/08/2019 16:24

I empty all the change out of my
Purse except 1£ and 2£ coins into a money box we affectionately call 'mummy's leaving fund'. There's usually a surprising amount in there which I don't really miss. Dh saves coppers in a big jar which looks impressive but actually only has about £6 in there.

Thanks all, think will try and save the change - and £2 and use the bank feature.... which hopefully works a bit.

Yes I save £2s in a breakable money pot. I find it takes me about two years to fill and contains £1,000 or a bit more when full. I have filled it twice so far and am on the third one now! I wonder if it may take longer as I use contactless all the time now.

Likethebattle · 25/08/2019 13:58

I put money away on payday and I also move any money in my account over the day before payday. It might be £50 it might be £100 it might be £2.99 but it’s something. I recently got myself out of all debt apart from my mortgage and determined to have a ‘pot’
