RIP Belinda Rose

I had not seen this in the news, but I read today that 2 days after PC Andrew Harper was brutally murdered whilst doing his job, Belinda Rose, a social worker, was stabbed to death whilst on a home visit.

www.birminghammail.co.uk/news/midlands-news/man-accused-belinda-roses-murder-16791338

The awful murder of PC Harper has, quite rightly, had huge media coverage, minutes silence up and down the country, statement from the Prime Minister. This was a public servant who was murdered whilst doing his job, and it has absolutely justly warranted a lot of attention.

So why has Belinda Rose's murder barely made the news? She was a public servant who was murdered doing her job as well. It is on national news outlets but only if you really look for it, it certainly hasn't made headlines as far as I can see.

I often think that being a social worker must be an incredibly dangerous job at times, when you think of the people you are dealing with and the fact that you are going into people's homes often alone. And yet social workers barely get any recognition, even when they are killed in the line of duty apparently.

Anyway, I just wanted to start a thread to recognise Belinda and the job that she did, to all social workers and all people out there who are putting themselves at risk to try and make things better for others.

i think the policemans death was so horrific that it ..well sickened people.
I only read about this one on mn.
news is weird. there was a little boy who most likely drowned least week.(I presume the body has not yet been found) and I have seen nothing about it apart from on the bbc "local" news.

ExpletiveDelighted · 23/08/2019 22:49

I haven't seen it in the news but a couple of friends have posted about it on FB. It's shocking that there has been so little public acknowledgement of this tragic death. RIP Belinda and thank you.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 23/08/2019 22:53

The little boy has been found and it has been on national news.

I think the policeman’s death is more shocking. That’s not to say Belinda’s death shouldn’t be acknowledged but they were killed in different circumstances.

LookImAHooman · 23/08/2019 22:54

Samcro Do you mean Lucas Dobson? It was all over national broadcast, online and print for days until his body was found midweek. Apologies if you mean someone else (I hope not, though. One is too many already).

RIP Belinda. Horrific and I’m sorry I hadn’t heard, either.

I heard about Belinda Rose's murder through MN yesterday and it saddened me. I agree that the comparative lack of media coverage feels unfair and I think it devalues the essential role social workers play in supporting our society, up and down the country, day after day. Also, a defenceless older woman has lost her life in the line of duty, another aspect of this tragedy which seems to have gone largely unreported when compared with the murder of PC Harper, a young married man. Unfortunately, remarking upon such media discrepancies can provoke accusations that we're arguing about whose murder 'deserves' more exposure, which only adds to the sense of futility for me.

Wellandtrulyoutnumbered · 23/08/2019 22:56

Police are popular . social workers aren't. It really is as simple as that.

Samcro · 23/08/2019 22:58

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat thanks, very sad, but at least he has been found.
sorry for hi jack Op

Wellandtrulyoutnumbered · 23/08/2019 22:58

Not that it should be. I've been ranting about this myself this week.

Time after time my friends in SW are threatened, intimidated and expected to carry on and work with families as there is no-one else. Getting visits in pairs is rare due to staff shortages.

Yes exactly this - on the one hand I feel like it should be recognised and questioned but as you say, it then turns into a 'who deserves more exposure' thing which is pointless.

Very sad story, RIP Belinda.

I'm not surprised though that this has happened, my friend was held hostage by knifepoint as a SW. She was lucky in that she got out alive, the lasting effects will stay with her for a long time.

Teacupsandhandbags · 23/08/2019 23:15

As a social worker myself- this scares me. There is such poor news coverage about Belinda’s murder and I think this really reflects the lack of recognition social workers get in general.

To think of someone going into a home visit and being murdered is unbearable. Truly horrific.

RIP Belinda.

Both such tragic stories. Very saddened to hear about both deaths.
