Manchester, Longsight or Victoria Park area

My 21 yo DS is just in the process of looking for a flat/house share in Manchester. He’s just about to start his first job in September and will be moving to Manchester very shortly. He’s been up there for a week looking at properties and has decided on one in this area. I’m a bit dubious about it, it’s above a shop in this area. I’m guessing from street view it’s a 1950s or 60s council estate with solid looking red brick houses and privet hedges. It might be lovely for all I know.

Has anyone any knowledge about the area? He’ll be working in the centre of Manchester so has pretty much no restrictions on where he lives.

OK, he’s coming home tomorrow and it’s a bit late to do any more viewings. Sigh. There’s a nice place near Salford University he’s already seen, but was more expensive. So he ruled it out.

Would that be OK for a few months until he’s familiar with the area?

It depends how near Salford Uni.. very close and I would strike that out too

Surfskatefamily · 23/08/2019 18:27

Withington or didsbury. I'm from Cheadle hulme originally which is also nice but a very boring place

baubled · 23/08/2019 18:28

@MillicentMartha what's the name of the street in Salford?

MillicentMartha · 23/08/2019 18:28

Very close, I think. On The Crescent?

Whereabouts will he be working? If central Manchester, it would be sensible to find a location near a train/tram stop as that would generally be the best transport (roads in South Manchester are horrible during rush hour).

MillicentMartha · 23/08/2019 18:31

Very central Manchester.

baubled · 23/08/2019 18:31

He would be close to the centre there, that would be a bonus but it's a bit of a dingy area if he's further back

MillicentMartha · 23/08/2019 18:33

OK, thanks baubled he might stick with that for now at least.

I was born and brought up in Longsight, but would not want any of my kids living there. Didsbury or Chorlton nice places to live but a bit pricey. Maybe Withington or Fallow field or Heaton Chapel.

Mumsymumphy · 23/08/2019 18:46

Another PP said the Heatons. Heaton Moor is nice and smart - pubs/bars/restaurants in the centre and a train station.

Has he got the Rightmove app? It's great for typing in areas and he'll get a good idea of different properties and rental prices etc (I love looking at properties in Mayfair in London 😆)

Thank you all. I just had a bad feeling about it. It’s hard when you know nothing about the city at all. I wish I’d asked last week. Flowers

Why doesn't he go more North? Prestwich, Whitefield, Bury? Nice areas. You get more for your money and fantastic transport links including the tram?

RafaelAndJane · 23/08/2019 20:01

Didsbury is a bit far out.

Didsbury has superb transport links to the city centre: metrolink, trains and buses. The metrolink is particularly good - the trams run every 6 minutes and take 20 mins to get to the city. The train takes 15 mins.

Also, Didsbury is a great place to live for young people - vibrant and trendy, lots of bars, pubs, cafes, shops, etc.

floppybit · 23/08/2019 20:16

Did you say Salford Crescent? He could walk into the city centre from there. Really up and coming, loads of bars and cafes opening up, lots of new development going on, that would be ideal!!

MillicentMartha · 23/08/2019 20:52

The Crescent right by Salford University?

MillicentMartha · 23/08/2019 20:52

@floppybit, is that the same place?

I have lived in longsight since 2001 it's not how it was before. It has much lower crime compared to other areas. I'm 25 and live 2 mins walk from meldon road. It's a perfectly safe place to live. I have been out at 1am and 2am in longsight nothing ever happened. He can take the 50 bus to town which is right next to meldon road or he can take the 192 bus to town from stockport road. I work in Asset Management in finance with a very good job and pay. However I choose to live in longsight because of the good community life here. The people are very friendly. And everything is very close by so easy to commute. I have a car but still choose to use a bus to go work taking the 192 everyday. You have nothing to worry about. Places like didsbury and Charlton are just more posh. I would class longsight as lower middle class. Only parts of Manchester I would avoid are follow field as students have a lot of parties and the noise can be bad at night. And I would avoid east Manchester as its extremely deprived. If you dont believe me take a look at zoopla house price heat map for Manchester. House prices can give u a good idea how good an area is. And longsight is not that cheap. It's also got the fastest house sale turn around of 14 weeks Google it. houses sell like hot cakes in longsight fastest in Manchester as it's now a popular area.

MillicentMartha · 23/08/2019 21:23

Thank you YMS, it’s nice to get another viewpoint. I’ll pass it on to him.

floppybit · 23/08/2019 21:40

@MillicentMartha yes, that's the same place. Salford University is on the Crescent. Whereabouts exactly was the property? If it's anywhere near the salford precinct end it's not so good, but the end nearer town would be ideal.....

floppybit · 23/08/2019 21:43

I also think Longsight is fine by the way. Plenty of amenities and easy to get into town.

YMS234 · 23/08/2019 21:50

just to give you facts here is police data for crimes in Longsight, Didsbury and charlton. Do you see much difference ? I dont...

MillicentMartha · 23/08/2019 21:58

Yes, I’m probably being over protective. It’s hard when he’s properly leaving home and neither of us have any knowledge of Manchester, except that it’s more exciting than around here!

This is the type of place on the Crescent. No idea where it is.

Dh works with a lot of Mancunians. They affectionately refer to Longsight as Gunsight, I believe it has improved from the old Moss Side though.
