Fish’n’chips near Portsmouth harbour?

Calling on the MN hive mind - we’re catching an overnight ferry (Brittany Ferries) from Portsmouth and would rather get some fish and chips beforehand than pay onboard food prices. Is there a good chippie near the ferry terminal, ideally with convenient parking?

Thanks!

It’s not a chippy but there is a McDonalds very nearby as we are getting overnight ferry too this weekend and needed food too.

There is only a takeaway chips, burger etc stall by there but you’ve got Gunwharf Quays right next to the harbour which has loads of restaurants and cafes and a multi storey car park.

Oh that’s fab, thanks both!

The closest is a Sainsbury’s on the next roundabout after the France boat harbour. You could get picnic food.
Before you get to Gunwharf ( which has lots of places to eat)but is drive into town, there is a large car park for Cascades on the left. You can park there and finding any number of hot food places along Portsmouth high street. Casdaes is a mall but many shops have their front enterance on the high street.
Google map and you can see the layout.

WHen are you going? It’s victorious festival this weekend so it’s going to be super busy and limited parking - don’t venture too far in!

The takeaway chippie by the hovercraft terminal is where I always get fish and chips in Portsmouth. They are always good.

combatbarbie · 23/08/2019 16:15

Victorious festival this weekend so watch the roads.... Personally my fave fish n chips is from the little shop next to Lidl in Fareham

Nothingcomesforfree · 23/08/2019 16:20

You won’t get near Southsea if it’s this weekend. The roads are already gridlocked.

Mother Kelly's is good. It has a car park and you can sit in or takeaway. 5 mins off the m27 and probably 10 mins drive to the port.

Gunwarf is next to The Hard so you'll have to drive there from the Ferry Port (which I wouldn't recommend unless you've got a few hours to kill first)!

Al2O3 · 23/08/2019 16:37

What vehicle are you driving? Many car parks have restricted heights so motor homes, caravans and some roof boxes just won't work.

MoltoAgitato · 23/08/2019 21:03

It’s a car with bike rack, so a bit longer but no higher. Just had a read about the festival - is the centre going to be completely chokka? Gun wharf Quay looks like a possibility for parking but don’t want to spend ages in a traffic queue!

Thanks again all:)

Portsmouth is always busy. Especially this time of year with the festivals and tourists visiting the dock yard etc.

The ferry port isn't that close to gunwharf and you risk being late if you venture down that way and find gridlock Shock.

AtleastitsnotMonday · 23/08/2019 22:30

Which direction are you coming from? With victorious going on I’d be tempted to come off a junction early to eat. If you are travelling eastbound down the M27 you go go to whitely junction 9 lots of places to eat there.

Accuracyiskey · 24/08/2019 08:22

In all honesty you will probably be better off buying the food on board the ship. From what I'm reading here you are getting some poor advice where people are suggesting GWQ and the hovercraft terminal. GWQ is a no no at most weekends , traffic gridlock in and out. And, as others have pointed out it's Victorious festival all weekend so many roads are already closed. The suggestion of Mother Kelly's is reasonable approx 15 minutes from the ferry port and a straightforward journey. Believe me, you don't want to go beyond the ferry port this weekend.

Idea86 · 24/08/2019 12:45

I'd go to mother Kelly's or alternatively Mick's burger van on top of Portsdown Hill :)

MoltoAgitato · 24/08/2019 15:17

Whole plan has been scuppered by traffic anyway - M25/M3/A3 are all solid so we are not going to have any time :(
