My newborn turns into warthog after night feed

He naps silently, he feeds silently.. until after his 3am nightfeed. He feeds so noisily and then grunts and groans and makes weird (loud) noises until 7am. I just can't sleep through them so I'm struggling massively. Any idea what could cause this?

He has reflux he's on medicine for, his cot is slightly tilted to ease it, I burp him and sit him up for a little while. I do everything the same!

Mine did this. She kind of just grew out of it, I think it's just that their guts are still immature and a bit crap. You could try working on your winding technique but I foubd nothing really worked for mine until she got bigger and could wriggle about more.

Constantlurker · 23/08/2019 09:11

Mine did this too. Nobody believed us until my mum and sister came to stay and heard her through the walls! It settled down after a while but we used to call her Madame gruntsalot. Freaked me out at first as I thought she was struggling to breathe, she also had terrible reflux, but you learn to tune it out. Congratulations on the new arrival, hope you manage to sleep soon!

Mine also did this and your post made me smile because I also used to call her my warthog! I remember the frustration at not being able to sleep through the grunting! It does get better, I can’t remember exactly when but definitely by 2 months. Hang in there!

BobTheFishermansWife · 23/08/2019 09:35

Oh bless you op, mines 6 weeks and exactly the same, 2.30am feed and then we have a snuffling grunt until he wakes for his next feed.

@Constantlurker is right in the past 2 weeks I've managed to tune it out, he does wake me every so often, but for the most part I can sleep. Fingers crossed it gets better for you.

Needallthesleep · 23/08/2019 09:39

So normal, mine sounded like a goat. Someone once told me that I would miss the noise when she grew out of it. I can categorically tell you I did not!

Fizzytonicplease · 23/08/2019 09:40

My DS does this, i was so worried as his brother never did. We were told its just his gut maturing and the muscles need to learn how to relax to pass wind, he is 9weeks now and it's a lot better i hardly hear him and he only does it for a very short time (about 5min) after his night feed.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 23/08/2019 09:59

My youngest was a warthog too.
Could be worse, my eldest used to wake us up every morning with a merry tooting fart tune. Some of them were so long I thought they'd be powering him up out of the Moses basket like a rocket engine.
I did eventually learn to tune out all of ds2's nightly noise. DH didn't and has been the one to get up to deal with nightmares and other issues whilst I'm drooling away on my pillow dead to the world.
All I can say is that it won't last forever, even though it feels like it will.

Emelene · 23/08/2019 10:14

Yep, I called my little girl's "dinosaur noises" but she did grow out of it!

MrsPellegrinoPetrichor · 23/08/2019 10:16

Earplugs, just work enough to dull the sound but you can still hear him. Used to drive me mad,D's was like a foraging animal Grin

20viona · 23/08/2019 10:20

My daughter does this and the doctor said it's her just sussing our her body and nothing to worry about. I agree though it's annoying at that time in the morning.

MyNameIsRachel · 23/08/2019 10:22

Yes mine did this too, very normal and I couldn’t sleep either. I basically had 5.30-7.30 am sleep for 3 months

CassianAndor · 23/08/2019 10:23

sorry, OP, nothing helpful to say but your post title did make me laugh Grin!

MyNameIsRachel · 23/08/2019 10:23

In fact I did a thread about this, for the first month the noises used to give me an electric shock feeling. It was actually torture and for 2 months I had regret !

Aqueo517 · 23/08/2019 10:25

Mine did this too, used to drive me potty! He sounded like dinosaur. I think it stopped when he was a couple of months old.

dragonfruitshoot · 23/08/2019 10:33

Mine writhed about, grunted and groaned from 2am every night, no way I could sleep through the noise, and I also got the electric shock feeling! Was awful, I thought there was something wrong, and I was so so so tired. It stopped eventually.
