Hi has anyone ever gone straight to a sippy cup ? 6 month old currently mix fed ( but terrible with bottles ) I have a doidy cup which he is trying his best with. Just wondered if anyone else used a cup for formula rather than bottles ?

We did but later as DSs were bf. If they’ll use one successfully there’s no issue I can see.

Tiggles · 23/08/2019 08:27

I did.
Ds1 refused to ever use a bottle or toddler cup but would use a small proper cup (obviously with help). The other two both went to toddler cups without a bottle in the middle.

Neither if mine would go near a bottle. It was boob or a cup.

Yes! Me!

I have an 8 month old and bought all the tests and bottles for when I stop breast feeding.
But then I wondered why I needed the bottles I could just transition to supply cups?

Doidy cups are awful and I don't understand why anyone likes them.

We have one of those 360 ones and they are great.

Ginnymweasley · 23/08/2019 08:41

My ds has never used a bottle. He was never interested. Tbh he's not keen on sippy cups either but he likes ones with straws or a normal cup.

CocoLoco87 · 23/08/2019 08:42

DS2 always refused a bottle. I breastfed for 10 months and then he just used those 360 sippy cups. He never wanted formula and he refused cows milk so he actually has got by on water! And he's very healthy etc. He has lots of yogurt, cheese and other dairy products.

Same here DD was a ebf bottle refuser. We went straight to a sippy cup at 6 months. She now drinks great out of a normal open cup since 12 months. I actually think if you get to this stage without a bottle there is no point introducing one.

Belgravian · 23/08/2019 08:44

Mine never had a bottle. Breastfeed and straight to a cup.

mightybuzz · 23/08/2019 08:46

You literally don’t have to use bottles at all. Open cup is fine

Sittinonthefloor · 23/08/2019 08:46

Boob to cup here too. Can’t see the point of faffing with bottles if you don’t need to.

Thank you for fab replies ! So if I am to fully switch formula he should be ok to have all feeds in 360? He currently sleeps through the night so would be app day time feeds . We have just started weaning but currently he is having around 3-4 6oz bottles ( badly ) leaving a lot and 3-4 breastfeeds . Weight is fab 98th percentile . Just very dodgy with bottles takes a long time to have and gags etc we have tried loads every 1 on the market. This is dr brown for high palate as that's what he has but still hates it . We were breastfeeding alone for months but it was excessive and I almost fell down the stairs with tiredness. He had a bad latch from day 1 but no one could really help us I paid so much for services.

By all means give it a go but in my (personal, limited, anecdotal) experience it could be a struggle to get them to drink enough out of a cup for it to be their sole source of feeds. When people talk about going 'straight to a cup' they usually mean while continuing to breastfeed. We thought we could just use a cup with DS while I was at work since he was 7 months, and we could in theory but he was only just drinking enough to keep going (about one bottles worth over the whole day) and needed a big feed from me asap in the evening, and right through the night - he then had bottles during the day and how much he drank during the day literally quadrupled.

notso · 23/08/2019 09:29

DD went straight to cup at 6 months. It had to be a cup she could suck at though, I think it was an anyway up cup.

JanewaysBun · 23/08/2019 11:01

Only combining with boob tbh,

Re the doidy cup- i hate mine too! They have to tip it so far to get it into their mouths by that point DS just chucks it everywhere anyway. I just have a small picnic platic type cup (plastic shot glass also good idea) and a munchkin 360 - often slightly reduced in sainsbos.

With open cups DS finds it easier to have a no handle one as he is a bit more careful holding it with both hands. If there's a handle he is often too quick and it spills

NoDontLookAtMeImShy · 23/08/2019 14:03

I will look at my 360 when I go downstairs.

I wish I hadn't it with my older kids (they didn't exist then, too long ago!) they are so much better.

And so easy to clean as well.

Mam sippy cup from four months worked a treat with out 3.5 month old. He drinks his water from a proper plastic beaker with meals. Good luck x

NoSquirrels · 23/08/2019 19:30

We went to a sippy cup with a soft flexible spout - the Philips Avery looks similar?

We went from boob to doidy cup or Tommy Tipper first cup when DD was 6 months and I stopped bf.

It was a full replacement and DD had the equivalent of 4 full bottles per day. It worked but the doidy was messy. No cup where you had to suck worked for us but I think that was due to the fact that DD was tongue tied and just couldn’t get the grip of sucking.
