Tell me about Southampton

DS is considering Southampton uni. We went to an open day but didn't see an awful lot of the city (we were at the oceanography site) and what we did see didn't impress him. We're too far away for another visit unless we absolutely have to. If anyone knows the place, what do you think?

Though I agree the uni link buses are plentiful (just the bloody buses I want that aren't!).

It always seems to rain a lot in Southampton! Is he favouring location or course? Has he considered anywhere else? I have friends who did marine biology at Plymouth, but again the city isn't the prettiest. However the coastline down there has a lot to offer. Southampton is a deep sea port so you have to travel out a bit to get access to the sea.

Well, as someone who lives and works in South I can tell you we've escaped the worst of this summer's rain so far. Grin

The South....Hmm

@ChopinIn10Minuets I do! Just further East along the coast. Whenever I go it seems to bucket down. Maybe it's just my own personal raincloud Grin

Haha I went to University of Southampton and yes it did rain loads in the late summer/early autumn!

I was there ages ago but know it a little bit still today. A lot of people I know stayed down there. I would say first of all look at the courses and be heavily guided by that but also, look at the union and the opportunities available. I did SO much extra curricular stuff that wasn't available at my sister's uni, I'd have been very sad to go somewhere that didn't have those things (performing arts, union politics, trips away etc). Whatever you were interested in when I was there, there was a club for it.

The uni where I did my second degree didn't have anywhere like that sort of extra curricular provision and I was a bit sad about it as I made my friends from the fun things I did not just from my course, the first time round.

Clubs, bars etc tbh unless you go somewhere tiny or you are mad into hardcore clubbing, you find them anywhere. It's the other things that make uni life IMO.
