Where can I buy nice weighted blankets that don’t cost £100’s??

Really want to get a couple. Have an autistic dc so think he would benefit as he’s always under a blanket. Other dc suffers from anxiety and my sleep is shit. I can’t make one myself and don’t want to even try to be honest as I have no equipment etc etc. I want one of the lovely soft ones I keep seeing but they are literally hundreds of pounds and is like one for all three of us! I will only get one to start with though just to see how dc react to it. Where did you get yours and how much was it please?

If you can manage it at all, I'd recommend sewing one yourself, or asking a local sewing person to knock one up for you. They're really easy to make as it's just a load of straight lines, and you just fill them with the poly pellets you can buy online. There's lots of advice online about how to make them yourself, and also the correct weight for the individual.

It would work out SOOO much cheaper...I think even if you paid a local person to run one up.

To clarify - I made one a few years back!

Google "compression sheet" - imagine a lycra tube-shaped sheet that goes round the mattress. OK to sleep under as they're thin so less danger of overheating, still gives a feeling of security.

Also they're wayyy cheaper than weighted blankets - they mostly seem to be £27!

I've been trying to find one for the last few weeks and was about to start a thread myself, so glad I stumbled across this one though as I'm actually going to go to Costco tomorrow night for something else!

JeanMichelBisquiat
How did you manage to evenly fill the squares

Ouchmyheadhurts · 23/08/2019 05:44

weigh that buzio one is one I’m currently looking at. Do you have a cover for it? Mine will love it for the sofa so I don’t even know if they will use it at night but I want to try, especially dc2 who still wakes in the night despite his age Hmm

Mine was from wowcher and it was 40. Its called Giantex and you can also get it on amazon. The beads are sewn into pockets. Its great.

JeanMichelBisquiat · 23/08/2019 07:55

@Cillmantain

You just plan out how many squares you'll do, then take the total safe weight and divide by the number of squares - that gives you the weight per square.

You then measure out that weight in pellets, make separate little groups of pellets (each of that weight), then just funnel in a group of pellets into each square before you sew a horizontal line.

Hope that makes sense - have had no coffee so it may be completely garbled!!

I think the point of overheating is when children and adults who have autism or sensory impairments can't always tell when there too hot/cold , my son will run round the gym hall still with a jumper on sweat dripping off him but still won't ask to have the jumper taken off his 1-1 has to do it for him

WeighMeDown · 23/08/2019 09:11

I don’t have a cover for it, I really like it how it is, lovely soft organic cotton,

I bought it for work to “wear ” at my desk-and it’s really compact when rolled up to store.

Really easy to manoeuvre, much more so than my expensive Rocabis which are bulky.

I regretted buying the Rocabi (which is fine) after getting the Buzio

WeighMeDown · 23/08/2019 09:14

The Buzio really is just like a normal blanket/eiderdown but heavier.

littlemeitslyn · 23/08/2019 13:43

You could have had mine as I hate it but would cost too much to post !

Ouchmyheadhurts · 23/08/2019 16:16

Thank you anyway little Smile

I’ll probably get that one off amazon next month when I have a bit more moneyb

Well I’ve been to Costco and bought their type , it feels lovely and was cheaper instore than online so win , win - hope it works .

Ouchmyheadhurts · 23/08/2019 16:25

How much flora? Also can you answer my question about if you need to be a member to shop there?

OP posts:
Floralnomad · 23/08/2019 16:43

I think it was £47-48 ( was 52.99 online but I wanted dd to feel it ) , and yes you do need to be a member or know someone with a card who can take you / get it for you .

breaconoptimist · 23/08/2019 16:56

Amazon had the jaymag blanket on their deal of the day for £50 a few weeks back, I do think they help calm you down, we’ve had less trouble at night with worries since we got one although it is early days.

blindedbytiredness · 23/08/2019 17:00

Glad you've managed to get one Flora I'm off to Costco in half an hour to try and get one (it wasn't Leeds by any chance was it?)

Lovingmylife · 23/08/2019 17:04

I bought my son a compression blanket for his bed from sensory scout. He is sleeping longer now.

Ouchmyheadhurts · 23/08/2019 17:21

See I think the compression things are great but I want to be able to use them when on the sofa in the evenings too.... I’m not sure my youngest, who actually sleeps much worse than his autistic sibling, would like it as he doesn’t like me tucking his duvet in....

Now I want to go to Costco but I can’t so will sulk instead Grin everyone seems to go to costco.... yet I don’t know anyone close enough to borrow a card from! So annoying. Nearest is about an hour from me so it wouldn’t be regular trip for me.

blindedbytiredness · 23/08/2019 17:25

I only realised last week I qualified for one so I'm off to validate it tonight! Been going with DPs sister when we visit them soooo happy I can go myself now!

Floralnomad · 23/08/2019 17:26

blindedbytiredness , no Thurrock , but they were on the aisle with the towels if that helps , I’ve no idea if all the Costco’s are laid out the same .

WeighMeDown · 23/08/2019 17:32

@Ouchmyheadhurts

Anyone can buy a online Costco membership which allows you access to their online stock.

The weighted blanket is actually part of their online stock...

Ouchmyheadhurts · 23/08/2019 17:37

Thank you, I just had a look. Once I put that £15 on top of the price it’s then similar to amazon one.

I’d love to have a card to go around the shop and chose all the food!

I might get one.... are there things you can’t get online you can in the shop?
