Oral allergy syndrome

Does anyone suffer from this with fruit and vegetables? It started when I was about 11 and seems to have got worse the older I get. One single grape triggered it the other day Sad.

I don't eat any fruit because of it and cucumber and coleslaw also cause it. Peeling potatoes causes my hands to itch. I also suffer hayfever which I know is a connection.

I need to lose weight and want to start eating healthily so would like to be able to replace my snacks with fruit. Is there anything I can do to reduce the symptoms, would anti histamines work?

Wow reading some of these makes me realise I don't have it that bad. My hayfever isn't that bad compared to a lot of people either.

The first time it ever happened to me I was about 11 and eating a slice of melon. Felt the tingling and itchy throat/ears and had rash either side of my mouth from where it had came into contact with my skin.

Lots of cooked veg and meat is my plan Orangepancakes. If I have a meal that properly fills me up then I don't tend to snack.

Thanks for that tip wonderpants will have to try that out.

I was just about to post the hot drink too too, it works really well to kill my mouth/sinus/ears itch.

I didn't know about the different types of pollens having an effect. I must look into which are worst for me.

I had no idea this had a name, or that so many people experience it! Cherries and nectarines are the main ones for me, I'd assumed it was to do with pesticides until one of DH's homegrown strawberries did it to me

It's got a lot worse in the last few years, I've started eating a fair bit of tinned fruit instead of fresh as I don't have to faff about prepping it, and it doesn't make my mouth itchy like fresh fruit does

If anything, the fresher and more organic the fruit, the more I react :-(

I have just been diagnosed with this this week.

The doctor said that it's the immune system getting confused when you eat the fruit and thinking that you have eaten a load of pollen so reacting.

He said to microwave fruit before eating it, and to try taking an antihistamine before eating it to see if that stops the reaction. He also said that theres a good chance it's going to get worse and I'll start reacting to new fruit. At the moment I'm ok with vegetables.

I tried an antihistamine beforehand but it doesn't make any difference at all, sadly!

kimlo · 22/08/2019 18:36

I was going to try that! I might not bother now.
