Braces for 8 year old

Has anyone had a child this young have braces fitted? My ds's dentist has referred him to the orthodontist because his 2nd tooth is behind his front top tooth and its pushing it forward. I didnt think they would do anything this young but the dentist said they sometimes fit removable braces on children this age.

current thinking is to wait for all first teeth to be lost before fitting braces in most cases.
in case a first tooth won't move, extraction might be explored which could solve the issue.

My DS had the same issue and braces weren’t mentioned! He had the tooth removed.

We had similar issues. DD baby front tooth didn’t fell out but the back one was already through.

First step was to remove the baby one in the hope the adult would move forward on its own. Didn’t happen so we were sent to the orthodontist how said they would like to wait as long as possible.

A year later, so DD must have been 9, the cross bite was getting so bad, she had issues with the bottom front teeth loosening and the orthodontist fitted a retainer which she had to wear 24 hours/day to push the front top one forward.

She was expected to wear it for 6-9 months but after 4 months the treatment was already finished, so we were lucky.

No further issues, she may need fixed braces in a year but that’s due to other issues, the retainer actually helped already straighten her top teeth to a point that the fixed braces ones are under review instead of a definite must.

Dd is 8 and has just been referred - appointment isn't for a few weeks but the dentist said it was just to get the orthodontist opinion and get them in the system.

Don’t all the first teeth need to be out first?

Out as in fallen out.

My son had precisely this issue as an 8 year old. They removed the baby tooth and he had a removable brace for around 6-9 months. Easily sorted, very straight forward. He coped brilliantly and was very proud to be the first person in his class to have braces!

It would make sense if they did remove the tooth that is behind. As i am not sure there is much room for it to slot into the gap.. It is an adult tooth not a baby tooth.
I think they do normally wait until all baby teeth are out but maybe in some cases they to act to stop it getting worse.

My 8 year old has a removable brace with expander as he has teeth in his gum that can't come down as there isn't room between adult teeth. So Adult teeth 1 & 3 are right next to each other and tooth 2 is up in the gum unable to come though or about to come down on top of the others. It's widened his jaw by 2 cm and now they are coming down in between the existing teeth.

I had the same issue and had 18 adult teeth and numerous baby teeth removed Hmm so I'm very happy.

My 9 year old needs braces but our dentist has said it won't be for a good while yet as teeth still coming in will change shape and order. I'd get the back tooth removed for now.
