Help! Body odour in 7yo?

BeCoolYolanda · 21/08/2019 21:14

Ive noticed body odour on my 7yo dd twice now in the last couple of weeks, both been on hot days with lots of running around etc.

Shes washing properly and wearing clean clothes so I know its not a hygiene issue, google tells me its likely hormonal and usually the first sign of puberty Shock shes 7! A very young 7 too...

Is it too early? Should she be using a deodrant? Does anyone have any suggestions for a child friendly one? Would have to be a roll on one as she is asthmatic. Im a bit freaked out to be honest didnt think we would be dealing with this this early.

not too early in our experience, although its not all the time and not sure why.

child friendly roll on mine uses a lovely one from Green People its orangy scented but I think they do a couple. we explained body changes and bought the deodorant as a positive growing up thing rather than a chore or to fix a problem.

watching DC trying deodorant for the first time at that age is a hoot. Mine proudly rolled it across his chest and down his arms, other DC have rolled all over arms, legs and neck Grin.

Make sure she knows she has to wash her armpits daily. Either a shower or sink wash every morning to keep her fresh. I hate when people don’t wash and try to drown out BO by putting deodorant on top.

It's not too early.

The answer is thorough washing - teach her how to do her armpits inside and above and around. Use a bar soap and/or flannel.

Re deodorant - how about something quite natural - like the crystal ones. They don't stop sweating, just smells. They last quite some time too -unless dropped onthe bathroom floor and smashed into a zillion pieces--

Try not to worry. I noticed DD2 had BO occasionally when she was 7 years old too. She didn't start her periods until she was 12 and she was very tall by 12 as well! I was convinced she would start earlier.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 21/08/2019 21:49

Nope, seems about the right age.

DS2 is 8 and wears roll-on deodorant for children.

dollyandshirl · 21/08/2019 21:52

oh yeah and washing too, natch.

DD2 who's now 8 has been a bit whiffy on occasions for a couple of years - mainly in warm weather when she's been running around or particularly sweaty. I make sure she has a wash with proper soap (she uses Cidal which is antibacterial I think) every day and if it's PE day I'll also get her to put some antiperspirant on.

BeCoolYolanda · 21/08/2019 21:53

Thanks all, youve reassured me.

Ill show her how to wash armpits thoroughly in shower, she uses flannel/shower gel at the minute but might get her a little wash bag with her own soap etc in and will have a look at the crystal and green people deodrants to pop in too.

DD will most likely try to paint herself all over with it too Grin.

my 8YO has been whiffy of pit for a year or two now with no other signs of precocious puberty. Poor thing - her father and I are both particularly sweaty, and I think she just has a surfeit of sweaty genes.

she now washes daily with a bar of soap, which we've found more effective than shower gel, and uses antiperspirant - just a regular stick one.

Im glad its quite common, think i was expecting teenage hormones and periods to be around the corner, she still takes a teddy everywhere with her Grin.
