Removing nasty smell from cuddly toy

Ds took one of his soft toys in his friend’s car. It has come home stinking to high heaven of what seems to be furniture polish. A few weeks later and the smell hasn’t gone. I’m loathe to put it in the washing machine as it is new and very soft and I’ve had soft toys come out the machine a bit matted before, even in a pillow case.

Please help me remove the smell!

We used carpet shampoo on a cuddly toy which stank of vomit and was covered in vomit (and chocolate).

DH immersed the toy in a sink full and rubbed gently. It seemed to work well but no idea if it works on all toys. I think the stuffing is the issue with total immersion. It can rot.

Stick it outside in the fresh air all night? If you can be fairly sure it won't rain (or under cover?)

I would still put it in the washer.
a soft toy that doesn't survive the wool cycle isn't worth keeping imo,

Put it in a sealable plastic bag with a lot of bicarbonate of soda. Give the bag a good shake, get the toy covered, and leave overnight.
Next day, give the toy a good shake, and carefully vacuum the remaining powder off. If the smell is just a surface thing, it usually sorts it.

Wash it in one of the mesh bags you can get for delicates?

Hand wash it in the sink with a bit of baby shampoo and warm water. Air dry.

Years ago on Kim & Aggie they washed cuddly toys with well wrung out face cloth and soap which might be less destructive than a wash cycle.

Thanks all. I’ll try febreze and then washing with a soapy flannel as a double whammy.
