Moving to Uk from Malta

MamaJM · 21/08/2019 19:36

Hi, Me and My husband have been thinking of moving to the UK since our little island has become and working site full of dust and traffic!! My best friend lives in Kent UK and shes been nagging for me to take the plunge and move.
My husband works in Scotland and have to travel every three weeks, so this would definitely will make his life easier.
My kids both go to good church school but will have to shifted to public school in the UK.
I have a full time job here and I dont think its that easy to find a job in Kent so that will mean an decrease in income.
And I will have to pay rent whereas here in Malta I have no debts or loans so thats an extra minimum £800 expense taken away from my husband monthly income.
Our income will be around £3000 monthy (until I find a job myself i.e.)
Appreciate your feedback!

Why not move to Scotland?

MamaJM · 21/08/2019 19:41

@GreenTulips moving to Kent would mean I would be close to my close friend as hubby will be on the job every 3 weeks straight not returning home. Having a friend close by will be of great help.

There are faith schools in England too so that’s an option if you prefer (they are state schools so no fees).

Kent is a very nice county with lovely coutryside and coast. The massive problem I find with Kent, though is education. The whole county has a grammar school system. At the age of 10, children sit an exam. Some of them get into the academic grammar schools. The rest go to the remaining schools which are mostly appalling (often very very poor progress and exam results).

To be close to your friends, you could consider Sussex, Surrey or even outer London (there are some nice affordable areas).

Thanks for the tips:) much appreciated I will look into the nearby towns you mentioned

Kent is very expensive, especially if you're renting. Rents can be 50% less, the further up north you go.
I certainly wouldn't consider moving to the UK until this Brexit business is resolved (scrapped).

Scotland is very nice and generally much friendlier than down south, so you wouldn't have problems making new friends.

Some of Kent is pretty affordable. Scotland is generally more affordable and super pretty but for me the climate would be quite a challenge + very short days in winter especially further up north. Kent has a very mild climate. Vineyards sort of climate.

OP, Surrey and Sussex aren't towns- they're big counties. Each county is several times bigger than Malta.

I guess you need to find a bit of Kent that’s nearest City airport? If there’s regular flights to where your husband is. Actually bits of it aren’t that far from Gatwick.

Ohflippineck · 22/08/2019 09:10

Wouldn't even consider moving here until the situation is resolved. Kent may become a car park. The parts that won’t are already over-priced for what you get.
Scotland would be my choice too, if I really felt I had to move.

Everyone is suggesting to move to Scotland, but which part of Scotland would we move to? Any suggestions? I was kind of stuck on the idea on moving to Kent (Gravesend possibly) but very worried we would not afford rent + living expenses with 2 kids.

Glasgow, Edinburgh (centres pricey but suburbs much more realistic with fantastic public transport) Perth, beautiful, Stirling, beautiful. Inverness and lots of lovely towns further north but maybe a bit remote. Have a shuftie at Rightmove.

Don't! Brexit is turning us into a shithole.

drsausage · 22/08/2019 15:36

Are you Maltese? If so then you'll continue to be an EU citizen, which is good.

Speaking as someone who has lived in Malta, Scotland, and Kent, I wouldn't move to Kent.

Scotland really is lovely but choose your area carefully. And be ready for it to be much much colder than you're used to.

Are you UK nationals? If not you will need to keep a close eye on any changes to Freedom of Movement regulations.
