Dd and periods on holiday

TractorTartofThigh · 21/08/2019 11:39

Dd started having periods a few months ago, I have just bought her some period pants, we are going on holiday soon and she will have her period- anyone tried these for swimming? Or any ideas for swimming because she is not keen on the idea of tampons. I just used tampons when I was her age so not sure what else she can do, she loves water so doesn't want to miss out.
Also, they are lasting 10 days! I told her we will keep an eye on this and check with GP if it carries on.

You get period swimwear too but its pricey

StarringRole · 21/08/2019 11:42

I had norethisterone when I was young on holiday, maybe worth a talk to the doctor?

TractorTartofThigh · 21/08/2019 12:01

Thanks. She doesn't want to take any tablets.

I tried to find swimwear but it's only available in the US and takes too long to get here.

My dd was exactly in this position this year. I didn’t trust the idea of period swimwear and if they leaked she would have been mortified. She also doesn’t like the idea of tampons. Has been having periods since jan. also wasn’t keen on taking tablets. However, she is a swimmer and this was a pool holiday so for her not to swim for a week would have been awful. We discussed it and she decided she would try the tablets. Thank goodness, it was a very hot destination and if she couldn’t have swam she would have been miserable. After a couple of days apprehensively taking the tablets she was fine and took them no problems and had a fantastic holiday without having to deal with a period. Had a completely normal one once we returned and no side effects.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 21/08/2019 13:36

If she doesn't want to use tampons and doesn't want to take tablets and period swimwear won't arrive in time...I'm all out of ideas.

Given she's ruled out the two most obvious suggestions, what does she suggest?

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 21/08/2019 13:41

Modibodi do swimwear. They delivered reasonably quickly when I ordered underwear.

pjmask · 21/08/2019 13:47

Have you asked her why she doesn't want to take the tablets? It is the most obvious solution if she can't use tampons?

PuffHuffle5 · 21/08/2019 13:49

I can understand not wanting to use tampons to start, but why doesn’t she want the tablets?

Glasscrab · 21/08/2019 13:51

What @TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross said. If she's ruled out all viable solutions, it's hard to know where to go.

healthylifestylee · 21/08/2019 13:54

Can't suggest any other options really

LochJessMonster · 21/08/2019 14:22

If she doesn't want tampons and won't take tablets, then she can't swim. Simple as.

She needs to pick an option. Shes gonna have another 50+ years of this.

JanetandJohn500 · 21/08/2019 20:23

I took my (13yo) daughter for the period-delaying tablets the other week and wasn't allowed them. Apparently they're not licensed for under 16s

Likethebattle · 21/08/2019 20:52

I used the period delay tablets. My period used to last 11 days and was horrendously painful in the first few days. I also had a cycle of around 50 days (at least it meant I got it less often. The tablets really are the surest way to keep it from starting.

minibroncs · 21/08/2019 21:13

She only started her periods a few months ago, I think it's okay if she's not ready for tampons and tablets. Doesn't mean she never will, just means right now it's not for her.

So you support her with not being able to swim instead.

I don't see how it's helpful to be belligerent about how many years she will have to manage periods for.

FurrySlipperBoots · 21/08/2019 21:19

Poor girl, that's bad timing. She could try a wetsuit over the top of modibodis as extra leak protection? Depending on where you're going and whether the pool's heated that might seem a bit odd, but maybe better than not swimming at all. I guess she can go n the sea anyway?

What does she have against tampons? I know they take a lot of getting used to but better than sitting in a lounger watching everyone else have fun surely?

Likethebattle · 21/08/2019 21:39

@furryslipperboots if her hymen is still intact it may hurt trying tampons unfortunately. Mind you I still can’t use them and i’m 40. I have a tilted cervix so they never sit right and I feel them :(

TractorTartofThigh · 21/08/2019 21:47

I spoke to her again and she said she would like to try a tampon now. She also has some black swimming shorts and I said if the tampon doesn't work out she might be able to wear the period pants under the shorts.

She went away last month without me and had it then as well Hmm

Thanks for the help.

@Likethebattle

Yes, I remember the trouble I had with them as a teen. She can but try them though OP. Get her some of the really mini ones to practice with - obviously she shouldn't keep them in if she's not on her period but they'll give her an idea of if she can cope with them or not.

These are available on Amazon and should arrive in time. I bought some for my daughter but didn't need them in the end.

MoaningMinnie1 · 21/08/2019 23:01

Op, as far as I can tell this firm is UK based. Some are also sold on Amazon and Ebay.

Sorry if anyone else has already said so, I just read first post, googled and wanted to reply to you.
