Is a self-cleaning oven worth it?

Boring post alert...!

Our induction hob is on the blink and as our oven will be last remaining original appliance still working we are considering replacing both. I think I'd rather have one lot of upheaval in our small kitchen than risk the oven dying at a critical moment (like the dishwasher did a week before Christmas Gin)

I'm wondering about getting an oven with the self-cleaning function but don't know anyone with one to ask. Are they really worth it?

Any other useful oven features to consider?

Bit overwhelmed by all the brands and models and we will need to budget accordingly. Can probably stretch to useful functions but don't want to pay more for functions that don't really work. We do have a Which? subscription so will look on there too for highly rated brands, but they don't really test longevity.

Yes. I have one, and the difference is unbelievable.

I've had ovens with 'self clean' plates, but they were only on the sides, not the top and bottom - useless, becuase the bits that get dirtiest were the top and bottom and couldn't use oven cleaner on the sides. I now have an oven/grill that has a pyrolysis programme which zaps all of the gunk and trns it to ash that just takes a quick wipe. Brilliant.

Yes! I love mine! have to take the shelves out and the side bits that the shelves sit on, but it really does do a great job, reduces anything to ash, damp kitchen roll once done and cooled to wipe that up, done.
Door still needs cleaning though.
Mine is a Zanussi, same as my induction hob

Amazing, thanks for the info, especially what to avoid @SweetLathyrus

I'd heard that the super heating cleaning function zaps the gunk and turns it into ash, seemed a bit like pixie magic to me but that would be brilliant.

@timeforawine Definitely will be getting one where you can remove the glass from the oven door (our current one doesn't and I had to remove the door and unscrew the glass to clean inside). Obviously only did that once, before having children Grin

That sounds good :-) wonder if i can remove the glass....might have to check my manual. Hate cleaning the glass :-(

PurpleCrazyHorse · 21/08/2019 11:50

@timeforawine the door came off really easily as the hinges just clip in, but I did have to lay it on the counter top and then unscrew the panel to get to the back of the glass. It did look brilliant but it was a big job just to have a glass door I could see through for a while.

Zanussi is now on my list of brands to look at.
