Does your cat wear a collar?

DKitten was neutered last week and has spent a little time in the garden since.

He's getting braver and will soon want to roam.

He's been microchipped but I'm worried that without collar he may look like a stray and someone may take him in.

He's very, very friendly (all over strangers who come into the house) and I'm concerned he'll happily wander into another house.

Can you tell I'm anxious about letting him out? Grin

I spoke to the veterinary nurse, who said there's pros and cons to collars - we would get a snap release one, but I understand these still carry a risk.

Not any more. He was getting through one a day so we took his not so subtle hint

No. I tried with my older cat but she just kept taking them off. I didn't try with the younger one because he came from a traumatic background and though he is completely comfortable with me now, he is still skittish about the unknown.

No, never. I used to use safety collars, always decent quality and selected to snap with less pressure than you’d want. Until I came home to the unearthly yowling of current cat 1 hanging in the bushes. It hadn’t snapped, but unfortunately had caught on the only substantial branch, so poor thing couldn’t even get a purchase on the surrounding flimsy stems. She was literally batting herself around between twigs to keep from suffocation. Luckily she was only feet from the door, and was young and fit enough to keep it up till she saw me. So barring being exhausted and a few minor injuries she was ok but I’d never trust a quick release again.

Never worried about anyone thinking they were stray, I’ve had two ex strays that turned up with pretty collars and id tags but weren’t wanted back, and I have a regular visitor that does his best starved act and looks the stereotype of stray and unloved that has a lovely home. And under the hair has the belly to prove it.

We've been 'training' him the last couple of days using a castanet (clacking it whenever we give him food / treats). Thank you @RandomMess

The few places I looked for collars didn't stock 'kitten' ones, so we're holding off on a collar for now.
