Do you ever reminisce over one particular meal or food you had?!

7...maybe 8 years ago, I went to a friends house for dinner and she made the most incredible pasta dish. I mean it was out of this world...she moved to New Zealand shortly after and we lost touch but I think of this pasta at least once a month!

Most recent one is I was in Copenhagen a few weeks ago and had cardamom buns from a particular bakery (Juno’s if anyone’s going!) and I've thought about them every single day since. I could actually cry at the thought of how epic they were!

A warm rough pate I had in Florence, it sounds odd but it was so delicious, I’d never seen anything like it and haven’t since.

TheCanyon · 21/08/2019 10:18

A roasted cauliflower and spinach pie, out of this world. I can't even remotely replicate it.

Livedandlearned · 21/08/2019 10:26

I often reminisce about a chinese dish that I loved.

It was chefs special fried noodles. Never had it made the same way since.

The business has been taken over many years ago so I will never find out where they moved to.

I had the best mashed potatoes ever on a tour of Amish Country while we were in New York. Hands down the best bit of my trip.

BendydickCuminsnatch · 21/08/2019 10:33

Yes - massive, ridiculous, delicious tostada salad in California somewhere when I was 10. DROOL. So fresh.

Also goulash in a giant crusty roll at a Berlin Xmas market. Completely delicious, would like to replicate but have since turned veggie and not sure I could recreate the richness!

BendydickCuminsnatch · 21/08/2019 10:34

Also me and DH talk a LOT about the mash at Dinner by Heston. Pretty much pourable. So much butter.

Last year I had an incredible pad Thai at a tiny little place behind a curtain in Hells Kitchen. It was nicer than anything I had in Thailand. I've tried to make several "authentic" ones at home and my attempts are complete dog shit in comparison. My husband thinks they're great but he didn't taste the incredible one I had last year so doesn't have that comparison point.

I just remembered a goat steak I had in Portugal when I was 12. My dad and I had them, and they were so nice we ordered seconds. Rest of the family thought we were mad, but every now and again we reminisce about them.

Holiday in Kusadasi 7 years ago. Went to a restaurant called Saray 3 times in the one week and bought the chefs special chicken dish. It was a breast of chicken stuffed with shredded veggies in the most amazing sauce. I still lick my chops thinking of it.

TrendyNorthLondonTeen · 21/08/2019 10:44

Baked duck and apples from a restaurant in Krakow.

Saucery · 21/08/2019 10:48

A little deli in Deruta, Umbria. Ciabatta with mozzarella, rocket and tomatoes made up at the counter. I have never tasted anything so simple but so divine since. Every ingredient was at the top of its game.

I remember when I was younger going on holiday to Spain and having a pasta dish that came with my kids meal. I think it only had cheese and ham on it but I thought it was amazing. Looking back now it was probably basic but at the time I thought it was great and wanted it every time I went away. Smile

When I was about 8 I went to a friend's house to play. Dinner was 'sausage casserole'. I was expecting something akin to a stew, but was served a bed of rice with sausages on top topped with a tomato-ey sauce. Maybe sweet and sour - I have no idea. It was fantastic!

The starter of spaghetti in tomato sauce I had every night in one hotel in Italy. It was so simple, but divine.

The cornetti another hotel in italy served for breakfast. Like croissants, but much nicer. I've tried other cornetti but none were quite the same.

At the Ben Nevis Inn -

Chicken & Haggis Rumbledethumps -
pan seared chicken breast topped with sliced haggis set on a cabbage and cheese
mashed potato (rumbledethumps) finished with a creamy whisky and peppercorn sauce - truly delicious.

efeslight · 21/08/2019 11:39

I had golden syrup ice cream in Applecross Inn, in Scotland, it was wonderful.

Bigbopboo · 21/08/2019 11:39

Travelled to the Atlas Mountains from Marrakech. Arrived in a town called Imlil. It was knee deep in snow. We were completely unprepared and underdressed. Went to a really low key cafe and had the most amazing lamb tagine.

I have loads Blush

Best bagel I have ever eaten from Bohemia Bagel in Prague - DH and I grabbed them before a hike but they were just amazing.

Duck in some kind of cherry sauce at a restaurant called Mozaika (I’m certain I’ve spelt that wrong) in Prague (Prague is the place to go fof food it seems).

Junior’s baked cheesecake in NY - nothing else comes close.

Best club sandwich from a place that resembled a pub in Las Vegas- I’ve forgotten the name. We’d just come off our flight so we’re probably starving but I remember it tasting amazing!

A Mr Whippy cone and an ice cold Coke I had once on a seaside trip with my dad as a kid - I must have just had a really fun day and that taste while looking at the beach has stuck with me.

A prawn dish in a now closed down restaurant in Whitby. We went there every time we visited and I loved it so much I always ordered it. I'd try other stuff too, but always ordered the prawns.

And the best god damn pistachio Ice cream I have ever tasted in Dubrovnik. Nothing has come close.

Latenightreader · 21/08/2019 12:21

I was visiting my friend who was studying in Boston and we took a weekend trip to Cape Cod. Food was expensive (I was also a student) and we didn't eat much while we were away, but while we were waiting for the bus to Wellesley I bought a wrap. I don't think I'd had one before but it had hummus, veg and rice inside with some sort of dressing and the wrap was toasted spinach. It was amazing. 20 years later I still remember...

A pad thai dish from a street vendor in Bangkok. It cost less than £1 and was perfection

Frownette · 21/08/2019 12:31

@DieCryHate was this in New York? Sounds amazing.

I miss vegetarian dumplings and green onion pancakes from street vendors in China, also a Buddhist buffet which did an incredible variety of gorgeous food from noodles, rice, vegetables to meat pretend dishes, salads and sushi

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 21/08/2019 12:32

Last year DH made a chicken Korma from scratch and read the recipe wrong. It was AMAZING. He has never been able to recreate it despite numerous attempts.

Turquoisetamborine · 21/08/2019 12:38

My stepdad’s Mam made the most amazing food. I met her when I was 9 so we didn’t really have a grandma type relationship but she was fond of me.

She made the most amazing Yorkshire puddings which she served first with indescribable gravy in them (always served the men first 😝). She also served her Sunday dinners with this green sort of mint sauce stuff but it had what was like spring onions in it and other stuff.

She made chocolate eclairs from scratch too with her own choux pastry.

She suffered a brain tumour and had part of her skull removed so I couldn’t ask her how to make these dishes sadly. I like to think that she looked down fondly on how I remember her cooking.

MrsGrindah · 21/08/2019 12:44

My sister is an excellent cook but once made a chocolate mousse that went wrong. All the air had gone out of it. It was the best thing I have ever tasted!

Wonkybanana · 21/08/2019 12:50

Aka Yorkshire salad. Every family has it's own variation. Wonderful stuff.
